Justice for the victims of Lianga Massacre!

Tonight, let us light candles for Emerito, Jovello, and Dionel 🕯️🕯️🕯️

It is the 8th year since the massacre of Lumad leaders on September 1, 2015, also known as the Lianga Massacre 1. Those who were killed were ALCADEV Executive Director Emerito Samarca, and Dionel Campos and Datu Jovello Sinzo who are leading figures in Malahutayong Pakigbisog Alang sa Sumusunod (MAPASU). They were killed by the Magahat-Bagani paramilitary group under the 75th Infantry Battalion of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. Residents of the community in Lianga, Surigao del Sur were forced to evacuate and were only able to return to their community a year later.

In commemoration of the Lianga massacre, Katribu Kalipunan ng Katutubong Mamamayan ng Pilipinas, Sandugo Movement of Moro and Indigenous Peoples for Self-Determination, and Bai Indigenous Women’s Network, will be holding an online candle lighting ceremony in remembrance of the victims and all those who were affected by the state-enforced killings. We invite everyone to join us tonight, September 1, 7pm, by posting a picture or video of your lit candles on social media. Let us refuel the flames of collective memory and demand justice for the victims of the Lianga Massacre 1.

You may also include photos and calls as background of the lit candles. Use the hashtags , , and tag us on our social media accounts.

LONG LIVE THE LEGACY OF DATU TAYADAN, LEADER OF THE LUMAD-MANOBO, DEFENDER OF ANDAP VALLEY!

The MAPASU organization pays tribute to Datu Tayadan for his life dedicated in the defense of ancestral lands against foreign plunder of our resources. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Datu Tayadan for his courageous leadership to fight for the people's right to education and self-determination. We vow to carry on his legacy and continue the struggle for the protection of our ancestral lands.

Datu Tayadan's life of serving the people will remain a source of inspiration to the people of MAPASU in Andap Valley complex. His firm stance against large-scale coal mining companies goes back decades ago when he led the Manobo people's resistance against US-owned Lianga Bay Logging Company in the 1960s. He was there when we overthrown Benguet Mining Corporation in 1984 which was then still in its exploration phase.

Decades later, we continue to face military encampment of our communities, harassment, trumped-up charges, mass displacement, and killings to pave the way for the entry of Abacus Coal Mining, Benguet Mining Corp., GreatWall Mining and several other coal mining companies which the Philippine government awards operating contracts to from one administration to another.

Amid the relentless attacks, Datu Tayadan and we in the MAPASU organization refuse to back down from our fight. We stand strong and continue to expand and consolidate our organization to collectively defend our ancestral land. The military and paramilitary killed our people from the first Lianga massacre in 2015 to the second Lianga massacre in 2020. The killings of our leaders Dionel Campos, Datu Juvelio Sinzo, and ALCADEV teacher Emerito Samarca, Angel Rivas, Lenie Rivas and Willie Acevedo serve as a painful reminder of the great sacrifices that the MAPASU people have had to make in our fight to protect our home.

Datu Tayadan's legacy goes beyond his fight against mining corporations. He was a symbol of the resilience and strength of the indigenous peoples of the Philippines. His commitment to preserving his people's way of life and their ancestral lands inspired countless others to stand up for their rights. He embodied the spirit of the indigenous people who have been marginalized and oppressed for centuries, but who have never given up their fight for just and lasting peace.

The continued support of the current administration of Bongbong Marcos for the operation of coal mining projects only serves to strengthen our resolve to fight the exploitation of our resources. The military presence in our communities further underscores the urgent need for the people to unite and defend our rights.

Our tribute to Datu Tayadan is a testament to the impact he had on our community. His legacy continues to motivate and inspire us.

His legacy will continue to live on, inspiring future generations to stand up for their rights and defend their ancestral lands. We are not alone in our fight. We have the support of many other indigenous communities, as well as environmental and human rights organizations, who share our commitment to protecting the environment and promoting social justice.

Datu Tayadan's legacy is also a reminder of the importance of valuing and enriching indigenous culture and traditions. Our commitment to promote and collectively keep our customs and traditions alive is integral to our fight for justice. By celebrating our culture and history, we are asserting our right to self-determination and our place in the larger narrative of Philippine history.

Amid intensifying attacks, more Lumad youth will follow his path and ensure that the struggle continues!

LONG LIVE THE LEGACY OF DATU TAYADAN!
CONTINUE TO OPPOSE THE ENTRY OF COAL MINING COMPANIES!
DEFEND ANDAP VALLEY!
WADA KINUTOBAN NU PASALAMAT, DATU TAYADAN! PADADON TU PAKIGSIMANGGA!

KATRIBU URGES DUTERTE TO STEP DOWN, SEEKS JUSTICE FOR LIANGA MASSACRE VICTIMS

On September 1, 2015, Dionel Campos, Datu Juvello Sinzo, and Emerito Samarca were brutally killed by armed state forces and a paramilitary group in their communities in Lianga, Surigao del Sur. Emerito Samarca, executive director of Alternative Livelihood Development (ALCADEV), was found dead in one of ALCADEV’s classrooms with his body full of stab wounds particularly in his neck, arms, and legs, while Dionel Campos, chairperson of Manobo group Malahutayong Pakigbisog Alang sa Sumusunod (MAPASU), and his cousin Datu Juvello Sinzo was attacked and gunned down outside their home in Kilometer 16.

After six years, Lianga Massacre perpetrators Calpet Egua, Bobby Tejero, Magarito Layno together with AFP goons and paramilitary group Magahat Bagani remain unpunished and at large up to the present. And as justice has yet to be served, another massacre in Lianga last June 15, 2021, took the lives of 3 Lumad-Manobo named W***y Rodriguez, Lenie Rivas, and Angel Rivas. The victims’ faces and legs were brutally ruined, along with the female victims’ genitalia, which showed signs of r**e in the hands of the military before death.

Decade after decade, each administration with its reactionary government continues to perpetrate violence among the national minorities. Until today, none have had the decency to give justice to every crime heinously committed time and time again by their military and police forces. As a result, national minorities have been dissatisfied with the inaction of the government, thus, seek help from the masses.

Regarded as one of the staunch advocates for national minority rights, Kabataan para sa Tribung Pilipino (KATRIBU) shares their defiant voice with Secretary-General Eloisa Mesina’s statement, “Now more than ever, we must sharpen our militant and tireless resistance as justice remains unserved and state forces that perpetrated the Lianga massacre continue to roam free. As long as a fascist system lives from its continued exploitation to the basic sectors of society, human rights violations will not end. If we want genuine peace, we must build a community of action—a united people’s force.”

Thus, KATRIBU supports Lumad communities in their continuing call for justice for the victims of the Lianga Massacre. The Lianga Massacre that transpired last 2015 and this 2021 is a testament that as long as there is no justice, there would be no peace.
