🌿 1st Quarter Municipal Solid Waste Management Board Meeting – CY 2026 🌿

The Municipality of Lemery, under the leadership of Hon. Oscar C. Villegas, Jr., successfully conducted its First Quarter Municipal Solid Waste Management Board (MSWMB) Meeting for Calendar Year 2026 on March 12, 2026. The meeting gathered the members of the Board and key stakeholders committed to strengthening the municipality’s environmental protection and solid waste management initiatives.

The activity was presided over by Hon. Limwel T. Arban, Sangguniang Bayan Member and Chairperson on Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, who actively facilitated the discussions on policies and strategies aimed at improving the municipality’s waste management system.

During the meeting, the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) Secretariat presented updates on the environmental and solid waste management programs implemented in the previous year. The presentation highlighted the accomplishments and challenges encountered in the implementation of these programs. The Board also reviewed ongoing initiatives and discussed proposed programs and projects for 2026 that aim to further strengthen sustainable waste management practices within the municipality.

One of the key agenda points was the strengthening of Municipal Ordinance No. 2020-14, which regulates and discourages the use of single-use plastics in the municipality. The Board discussed strategies to intensify its implementation through stronger enforcement, community awareness campaigns, and the promotion of environmentally friendly alternatives in order to reduce plastic waste and protect the local environment.

Another agenda of the meeting was the presentation of a proposed research study by Ms. Jhairyn D. Sobrevega, IT Instructor of Northern Iloilo State University – Lemery Campus (NISU-Lemery) entitled “An AI-Enabled Municipal Waste Analytics and Decision Support System for Volume Tracking and Disposal Monitoring.” The proposed study aims to introduce innovative technology that can assist the municipality in monitoring waste generation, tracking disposal patterns, and supporting data-driven decision-making for more efficient and effective solid waste management.

The Municipal Solid Waste Management Board reaffirmed its commitment to continuously strengthen environmental governance and promote sustainable waste management practices through collaboration among the local government, academic institutions, and the community.

Through these collective efforts, the Municipality of Lemery continues to work towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable environment for all Lemerenhons. 🌱♻️

The Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) of the Municipality of Lemery, Iloilo conducted a benchmarking activity on the Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS) on March 10, 2026, in Panay, Roxas City, Capiz.

As part of the activity, the MENRO team made a courtesy call to EnP Ronald Allan F. Cullo, Environment and Natural Resources Officer of the Capiz Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (CaPENRO). The visit aimed to observe and learn best practices in the implementation of WACS which will support the updating of the 10-Year Solid Waste Management Plan of the Municipality of Lemery.

The MENRO staff, spearheaded by For. Hannan B. Oncio, Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer–Designate, actively participated in the field demonstration. During the activity, the team gained hands-on experience in the proper segregation, sorting, weighing, and recording of sampled waste collected from a barangay in Panay. These practical insights are essential in determining the composition and volume of waste generated at the barangay level.

After the hands-on activity on WACS, the team also paid a courtesy visit to the Municipal Mayor of the Municipality of Panay to express their gratitude for the warm welcome and for sharing their valuable experiences and best practices in implementing solid waste management programs.

This benchmarking activity provided valuable knowledge and technical guidance that will greatly assist the Municipality of Lemery in strengthening its solid waste management initiatives, ensuring data-driven planning, and promoting sustainable environmental practices in the community.

The Municipality of Lemery extends its sincere appreciation to the CaPENRO team and the Local Government Unit of Panay for their warm accommodation, support, and commitment to environmental protection.

“Young minds, strong roots, greener tomorrow.”

The Lemery National High School Youth for Environment in Schools Organization (YES-O), together with DRRM, BERT, SSLG, Sports Club, and the Boy Scouts, in full support of the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) of Lemery, successfully conducted a tree-growing activity at Brgy. San Jose, Lemery, Iloilo, with the active participation of the People’s Organization and members of the local community.

200 fruit-bearing trees were planted, including jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus), rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum), and avocado (Persea americana)—species that provide long-term environmental and economic benefits to the community.

The fruit-bearing trees were intercropped with corn, demonstrating an effective agroforestry approach that balance ecological restoration and agricultural productivity. This diversified system enhances soil fertility, improves microclimate conditions, increases biodiversity, and provides additional livelihood opportunities while restoring previously monocropped land.

More than planting trees, this initiative aims to instill environmental responsibility among the youth—empowering them to become active stewards of nature and champions of a greener, more sustainable future.
