๐˜พ๐™–๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ก๐™ก๐™–, ๐™Ž๐™ค๐™ง๐™จ๐™ค๐™œ๐™ค๐™ฃ โ€” Facing illness and termination from work, a finance company branch manager secured P342,438.52 in separation pay upon the mediation-conciliation mechanism of the Single Entry Approach (SEnA) of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Bicol, through its Sorsogon Provincial Office, on Thursday.

The employee had been terminated after being diagnosed with an illness deemed not curable within six months. Under Article 299 of the Labor Code, termination on this ground is allowed as an authorized cause, provided that certification from a competent public health authority is obtained and the corresponding separation pay is duly released by the employer.

Upon the complaint lodged through the SEnA, the said provincial office promptly conducted conciliation-mediation conferences. Despite geographical distance, the process was efficiently carried out through virtual conferencing, with the employer represented by its Employee Relations Manager and HR Business Partner.

DOLE Bicol Regional Director Imelda F. Gatinao said that as part of enforcing labor standards, workers in vulnerable situations must be treated with dignity and their concerns with utmost urgency.

With the facilitation of the SENA Desk Officer (SEADO), both parties engaged in constructive dialogue, clarified the legal basis of the claim, and worked toward a fair and humane resolution. The cooperation of the companyโ€™s management proved instrumental in reaching an amicable settlement.

To formalize the agreement and ensure finality, both parties executed a Quitclaim and Release, evidencing that the employee had received his full entitlement and that the matter had been settled voluntarily.

The employee expressed his gratitude for a timely resolution of his case, especially that the settlement comes at a crucial time as he continues his recovery.

๐‹๐Ž๐Ž๐Š | LABOR FORCE SURVEY - MARCH 2026

With the release of the March 2026 Labor Force Survey by the Philippine Statistics Office, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) remains optimistic about the labor market, citing 49.07 million employed Filipinos (95.0%) and a 63.3% labor force participation rate.

Unemployment stood at 5.0%, reflecting sustained government efforts to expand job opportunities and promote inclusive growth.

The Department vows to continue to provide access to decent job opportunities and strengthen employment and workforce skills development programs, and ensure sustainable livelihoods.

๐‹๐ž๐ ๐š๐ณ๐ฉ๐ข ๐‚๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ, ๐€๐ฅ๐›๐š๐ฒ โ€“ In response to the recent ashfall incident caused by the increased volcanic activity of Mayon Volcano, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Bicol allotted P150 million assistance through Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD) to support more than 20,000 beneficiaries in ashfall-affected municipalities in the Province of Albay.

Meanwhile, continuous profiling and validation activities are being conducted in coordination with Public Employment Service Offices (PESOs), local government units, and barangay officials to identify displaced workers and vulnerable sectors eligible for assistance.

Beneficiaries under the emergency employment program will participate in ashfall clearing operations, community clean-up drives, and rehabilitation activities in affected barangays.

DOLE Bicol is likewise preparing the rollout of the DOLE Integrated Livelihood Program (DILP) to assist severely affected informal workers and micro-enterprises in rebuilding their livelihoods.

Regional Director Imelda F. Gatinao said the agency remains committed to delivering immediate and responsive assistance to workers affected by the disaster.

She added that DOLE Bicol continues to coordinate closely with APSEMO, LGUs, PESOs, the Department of Social Welfare and Development, and other partner agencies to ensure an integrated and whole-of-government response for affected communities.

Based on the Situation Report issued by the Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office dated May 3, 2026, ashfall affected 129 barangays across the municipalities of Camalig, Guinobatan, Oas, and Ligao City, impacting approximately 55,991 families or 195,363 individuals. [End] /JVEG/
