Conservation is most effective when it is shared. By bringing together Olangoโs wetland users and tourism stakeholders, we transform collaboration into our most powerful toolโaddressing threats, restoring ecosystems, and safeguarding the islandโs resources for birds, marine life, and people alike.
On May 13, 2026, the Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary (OIWS) celebrated the Month of the Ocean. This activity served to reaffirm the Departmentโs commitment to the protection of migratory bird species and the marine ecosystems that serve as their critical habitats.
Bridging Education and Action
The day was packed with interactive learning, from deep dives into Sanctuary Zoning (Multiple Use vs. Strict Protection) to hands-on bird identification. Participants explored the vital role birds play as natureโs "health indicators"โreminding us that where birds thrive, our oceans and communities flourish.
Stewards of the Sanctuary
The atmosphere was charged with engagement, especially during our "Envi-Trivia" sessions. Local stakeholders left not just as users of the land, but as its primary stewards, recognizing that a healthy environment is their greatest asset.
A Unified Promise
The program concluded with a unified performance of โAgos ng Buhay,โ symbolizing a collective pledge to actively protect and preserve the region's marine and coastal resources. This commitment ensures that the sanctuary remains a viable habitat for wildlife and a sustainable resource for future generations.
