In his 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐌𝐚𝐲𝐨𝐫 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐨 “𝐉𝐨𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐞” 𝐎𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐨 laid out his successful developments for a stronger, more progressive, and future-ready Mandaue City, one that embraces 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞.

Among the initiatives highlighted is the city’s continuing partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 7, demonstrating how Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) can become powerful tools in advancing local governance and sustainable urban development.

Through the 𝐃𝐎𝐒𝐓 𝟕 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦, 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐮𝐞 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 is taking steps toward becoming a smarter and more sustainable city. The initiative includes exploring 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐰𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲, a transformative approach that can support urban planning, infrastructure management, data-driven decision-making, and the delivery of more responsive services.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Central Visayas, through its Smart and Sustainable Communities Program (SSCP), launched an initiative to strengthen the candle-making industry and livelihood opportunities of the Tangub Candle Maker’s Association in Pinamungajan, Cebu. DOST provided modern candle-making equipment to enhance production capacity, improve product quality and consistency, and enable the Association to better respond to market opportunities.

Beyond equipment provision, the initiative aims to empower the local community through science, technology, and innovation, fostering sustainable livelihoods and strengthening the local candle-making industry. It also seeks to build greater brand awareness and loyalty for Tangub-made candles, contributing to the municipality’s economic growth and resilience.

The launching was strongly supported by the Local Government Unit of Pinamungajan, with the presence of the Municipal Mayor, Hon. Glenn F. Baricuatro and Vice Mayor, Hon. Ana Jessica "Jecjec" Baricuatro, together with the complete lineup of the Sangguniang Bayan Members. The collaboration among DOST, the LGU, and the Association underscores a shared commitment to modernizing traditional livelihoods, creating sustainable opportunities, and driving inclusive local development through innovation. 💡

TURNING FOOD IDEAS INTO BETTER, MARKET-READY PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT.

The Department of Science and Technology Region VII, through its Food Research, Development and Innovation (ReDI), continues to support the growth, innovation, and competitiveness of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the food sector.

DOST Region VII conducted an Online Training on Food Product Development, bringing together MSMEs engaged in food businesses and manufacturing to strengthen their knowledge and capabilities in developing and improving food products.

The session featured Ms. Sheena Oberes and Ms. Arianne Ato, speakers and members of the DOST Region VII Food Research, Development and Innovation (ReDI) Team, who shared their technical knowledge and practical insights on the food product development process.

Participants gained valuable perspectives on the principles and processes involved in transforming food concepts into improved and market-ready products, from understanding consumer needs and product concepts to enhancing product quality, consistency, safety, and market potential.

For food enterprises, developing a product is more than creating something that tastes good. It means understanding the needs of consumers, ensuring quality and safety, considering production requirements, and developing products that can respond to market opportunities.

Through initiatives such as this, DOST Region VII continues to bring science, technology, and innovation closer to MSMEs, helping local food enterprises turn ideas into opportunities for growth and competitiveness.
