501st Brigade Kicks Off June with Recognition, Renewal, and Commitment to Mission

CAMP LUIS F. BERSAMIN SR., Brgy. Tagodtod, Lagangilang, Abra – The 501st Infantry (VALIANT) Brigade together with the 50th Infantry (DEFENDER) Battalion, Philippine Army conducted its first Monday Flag Raising Ceremony for the month, on June 1, 2026 at the Brigade Headquarters in So. Barbarit, Brgy. Tagodtod, Lagangilang, Abra.

The ceremony highlighted the Brigade’s strong esprit de corps and served as a platform to recognize the dedication, professionalism, and exemplary service of its personnel. Presided over by the Acting Brigade Commander, COL DAVICE CHRISTOPHER G MERCADO GSC (INF) PA, the event reinforced the Brigade’s enduring commitment to its mission of sustaining peace, security, and development within its area of responsibility.

A significant highlight of the ceremony was the formal recognition of outstanding soldiers through an Awarding Ceremony whose dedication and performance contributed to the Brigade’s operational success. Newly assigned Officers and Enlisted Personnel were officially welcomed into the VALIANT family through the symbolic pinning of the Brigade Unit Patch, signifying their integration into the unit and commitment to its proud traditions. Likewise, deserving personnel received awards in recognition of their exceptional accomplishments and unwavering dedication to duty.

In his message, COL MERCADO commended the awardees for their professionalism, commitment, and invaluable contributions to the recent Brigade’s mission accomplishments. He emphasized that recognizing excellence fosters a culture of high performance, strengthens morale, and enhances the operational readiness of the organization.

The Acting Brigade Commander also warmly welcomed the newly assigned personnel, encouraging them to uphold the VALIANT spirit and embody the core values of honor, patriotism, integrity, and selfless service as they assume their new responsibilities. He likewise reminded all troops, including operationally controlled units, to remain steadfast and focused in carrying out their mandated missions in support of peace and development efforts across the Brigade’s Joint Operations Area (JOA).

As it continues to build on its achievements, the 501st Infantry (VALIANT) Brigade remains steadfast in its commitment to excellence, service, and nation-building, faithfully upholding the values that define the Philippine Army and the Filipino soldier.

The Municipality of Balbalan officially unveiled its Seal of State of Stable Internal Peace and Security (SSIPS) through a ceremony led by Hon. Mayor Almar P. Malannag and Hon. Vice Mayor Regina Munda Cruz at the Municipal Grounds, Salegseg, Balbalan, Kalinga, attended by representatives from the Philippine Army and various stakeholders.
After more than three decades of insurgency, Mayor Malannag emphasized that Balbalan has finally achieved a stable and insurgency-free status — a milestone that signifies peace, unity, and a brighter future for the municipality and its people.
The Mayor also expressed his gratitude to the Philippine Army, particularly to LTC Obias, for their unwavering commitment and significant contributions in sustaining peace and security in the area.
Vice Mayor Munda Cruz likewise encouraged all stakeholders to remain vigilant and united in protecting the gains of peace while continuously working and praying for lasting peace not only in Kalinga but throughout the country.

📍𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐄𝐔𝐌 | A museum dedicated to World War II veteran Maj. Luis F. Bersamin Sr. was blessed and opened at the headquarters of the 501st Infantry Brigade, Philippine Army.

The museum, located in the military camp that was also named after him, houses various memorabilia, historical artifacts, and old photographs depicting Bersamin’s life and contributions during and after the Second World War. The Municipality of Tanudan conducted a Peace Forum and unveiled its Stable Internal Peace and Security (SSIPS) Marker on 25 May 2026 following the flag-raising ceremony at the Multi-Purpose Hall in Poblacion, Tanudan, Kalinga.
The activity gathered personnel from the 103rd Infantry Battalion, the 1405th Community Defense Center, local government officials, barangay leaders, PNP personnel, and representatives from various government agencies in a unified demonstration of support for peace, security, and development in the municipality.
During the forum, MAJ Rely Barungan highlighted how the Province of Kalinga achieved stable peace and eventually became insurgency-free through the collective efforts of communities, local government units, security forces, and stakeholders under the Whole-of-Nation Approach. He emphasized that the peace currently enjoyed by the province was achieved through sacrifice, cooperation, and sustained commitment from all sectors.
He further stressed that preserving peace and order is essential in attracting investments, strengthening public confidence, and fostering continuous growth and development in the community.
MAJ Barungan also presented key peace and development initiatives being implemented in Kalinga, including Kalinga Para sa Kalinga (KPSK), Paggipigsa ti CAA iti Kalinga (PTCK), Revitalized Kalinga Local Integration Program (RKLIP), and the Kalinga Convergence for Community Resilient Empowerment, Sustainability, and Transformation (KCREST).
Meanwhile, LTC Dexter Dantog discussed reservist affairs and encouraged community participation in the reserve force, emphasizing the vital role of reservists in supporting national defense and community security.
The activity culminated with the unveiling and blessing of the SSIPS Marker, symbolizing Tanudan’s continuing commitment to preserving peace, unity, and sustainable development for future generations.

The 112th Birth Anniversary of Major Luis F. Bersamin Sr. was solemnly commemorated on May 22, 2026 at Camp Luis F. Bersamin Sr., a camp dedicated in his honor, gathering military personnel, local officials, veterans, and guests in tribute to a life defined by honor, courage, and service.

The ceremony was led by former Chief Justice Lucas P. Bersamin, the event’s honoree, together with Governor Eustaquio Bersamin, Vice Governor Anne Bersamin, BGEN Romualdo Raymund B. Landingin PA, and COL Davice Christopher G. Mercado INF (GSC) PA, Acting Brigade Commander, 501st Brigade.

Military honors, wreath-laying rites, and commemorative messages highlighted the enduring legacy of Maj. Bersamin Sr., whose dedication to duty and leadership continue to inspire generations.

A blessing of the museum and heritage space, led by Most Rev. Leopoldo C. Jaucian alongside Fr. Alvin Aberion, Parish Priest of Lagangilang, further emphasized the importance of preserving his life story as a symbol of patriotism, discipline, and public service.

The commemoration concluded with a unified salute; a fitting tribute to a legacy firmly anchored in honor, service, and duty.
