COURT CONVICTS CANADIAN NATIONAL LINKED TO ONE OF PHโS BIGGEST DRUG BUSTS
The Philippine National Police (PNP) welcomed the conviction of a Canadian national linked to the recovery of approximately 1.4 tons of suspected shabu worth โฑ9.68 billion in Alitagtag, Batangas, one of the largest anti-illegal drug operations in Philippine history.
The Regional Trial Court in Tagaytay City found Canadian national, "identified by the alias โJames Toby Martin,โguilty beyond reasonable doubt of two counts of Illegal Possession of Dangerous Drugs under Republic Act No. 9165. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment and imposed the corresponding fines after determining that the prosecution had sufficiently established the elements of the offenses and preserved the integrity of the evidence presented throughout the trial.
The conviction is the result of sustained intelligence monitoring, surveillance, and coordinated investigative efforts that began following the massive Batangas drug seizure in 2024, during the tenure of PNP Chief, Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., as Regional Director of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO). Through continuous validation, case build-up, and close inter-agency coordination, law enforcement authorities were able to identify key personalities linked to the illegal drug network, ultimately leading to the arrest and successful prosecution of the foreign national.
The case stemmed from the interception of approximately 1.4 tons of suspected shabu in Barangay Pinagkurusan, Alitagtag, Batangas on April 15, 2024, valued at around โฑ9.68 billion. The seizure ranks among the largest illegal drug recoveries in Philippine law enforcement history and prompted extensive follow-up operations to identify and dismantle the criminal network behind the shipment.
Subsequent investigations identified the suspect as a key figure and primary suspect in the drug operation. He was arrested on May 16, 2024, in Tagaytay City through a joint law enforcement operation while under an Interpol Red Notice and a Bureau of Immigration Mission Order for his alleged involvement in transnational drug trafficking activities.
Authorities also recovered substantial quantities of suspected shabu and co***ne during his arrest, which formed part of the evidence supporting the criminal cases that led to his conviction.
PNP Chief, Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., said the court's decision highlights the importance of sustained investigations and strong case preparation in ensuring that major anti-drug operations result in successful prosecution.
"This conviction demonstrates that effective law enforcement goes beyond the conduct of operations. It requires thorough investigation, proper handling of evidence, and strong case build-up to ensure that offenders are held accountable before the courts. Sa ganitong paraan, tunay na naipapakita na may pananagutan ang sinumang lalabag sa batas," PGEN Nartatez said.
"The successful prosecution of this case reflects the dedication of our investigators, operating units, and partner agencies who worked tirelessly from intelligence gathering to trial. This sends a strong message that the Philippines will not be a safe haven for individuals involved in illegal drug trafficking and transnational crimes," he added.
The conviction underscores the PNP's continuing commitment under its Focused Agenda through Enhanced Managing Police Operations and supports the peace and order priorities of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. Through intelligence-driven operations, strengthened investigations, and close inter-agency coordination, the PNP remains steadfast in dismantling illegal drug networks and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable under the law.
The PNP likewise reaffirms its commitment to protecting communities through lawful, professional, and accountable policing in line with Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat at Nararamdaman.
