Building Stronger Connections: Project Mountain View Expands to Baguio City and Benguet

Following its successful launch in the Schools Division Offices (SDOs) of Kalinga and Tabuk City, the Department of Education-Cordillera Administrative Region (DepEd-CAR) expanded the implementation of Project Mountain View to the SDOs of and Baguio City on June 10 and 11, 2026, respectively.

The activity brought together Regional Office and division officials to assess performance, discuss priority concerns, and identify responsive interventions that will further strengthen the delivery of basic education services. Through meaningful dialogue and collaborative planning, Project Mountain View continues to serve as a platform for aligning regional and division initiatives toward improved educational outcomes.

The expansion of the project to Benguet and Baguio City underscores DepEd-CAR's commitment to strengthening partnerships with Schools Division Offices and ensuring that programs, policies, and interventions remain responsive to the needs of schools, teachers, and learners in CAR.

Maligayang Araw ng Kalayaan! ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ

Wangal, La Trinidad, Benguet | June 10โ€“ The Department of Education โ€“ Cordillera Administrative Region (DepEd-CAR), in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology โ€“ Cordillera Administrative Region (DOST-CAR), the Department of Science and Technology โ€“ Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII), and BPI Foundation Inc., received 27 STARBOOKS Packages and six (6) Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI)-based Livelihood Intervention Packages aimed at enhancing access to quality learning resources and sustainable livelihood opportunities across the Cordillera.

Funded through a Php 3.7-million grant from BPI Foundation Inc., the initiative seeks to bridge knowledge gaps and empower communities by providing schools, learning centers, and beneficiary institutions with innovative educational tools and livelihood support. The project is expected to benefit more than 1,300 learners, teachers, Alternative Learning System (ALS) beneficiaries, and community members throughout the region.

The turnover ceremony was held at the DepEd-CAR Regional Office in Wangal, La Trinidad, Benguet on June 10, bringing together representatives from partner agencies, beneficiary institutions, and community stakeholders in a shared commitment to promoting science, technology, and innovation-driven development.

A key component of the project is the deployment of STARBOOKS (Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated KioskS), the country's first digital science library developed by DOST-STII. Designed to provide offline access to thousands of digitized science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), health, agriculture, and livelihood resources, STARBOOKS serves as an invaluable learning platform, particularly for schools and communities with limited internet connectivity.

Complementing the digital learning resources are the STI-based Livelihood Intervention Packages, which aim to equip beneficiaries with practical skills and technology-based livelihood opportunities that can help improve productivity, generate income, and support community development.

Through this collaboration, DepEd-CAR continues to strengthen educational opportunities by integrating science and technology into learning environments while supporting programs that promote lifelong learning, skills development, and community empowerment.

The partnership among DepEd-CAR, DOST-CAR, DOST-STII, and BPI Foundation Inc. reflects a shared commitment to fostering innovation, expanding access to quality education, and creating sustainable opportunities that will help transform the lives of learners and communities across the Cordillera.

For many athletes, success is often measured by medals and podium finishes. But for Mariene Kate L. De-is, a Grade 12 student-athlete from Benguet National High School, her final participation in the Palarong Pambansa was about something far greaterโ€”the honor of representing her school, her province, and the Cordillera region on the national stage.

Competing in table tennis, Mariene may not have brought home a medal this year, but she leaves with invaluable lessons, cherished memories, and a heart full of gratitude. As she concludes her Palarong Pambansa journey, she reflects on the privilege of wearing her regionโ€™s colors and competing alongside the country's finest young athletes.

"I am thankful for the opportunity to represent our school and our region," she shared. "Not everyone gets the chance to compete at this level, and I will always be grateful for this experience."

Despite the challenges and setbacks, Mariene remains proud of how far she has come. Her journey is a testament that true victory is not always found in medals, but in perseverance, growth, and the courage to keep striving for excellence.

To young athletes who aspire to reach their dreams, Mariene offers this inspiring message: "Kahit nadapa kayo, huwag sumuko. Bumangon at ipagpatuloy ang inyong pangarap." (Even if you fall, never give up. Rise again and continue pursuing your dreams.)

As one chapter closes, Mariene's story serves as a reminder that every athlete's journey is valuable. While medals may shine brightly, the character built through hard work, resilience, and sportsmanship shines even brighter.

Indeed, Mariene Kate De-is leaves the Palarong Pambansa not only as an athlete, but as an inspiration to the next generation of championsโ€”proving that success is not defined solely by medals, but by the courage to keep moving forward despite challenges.

For Joshua Aaron Erece, this year's Palarong Pambansa marked the final chapter of an extraordinary journey on the taekwondo mat. An incoming first-year college student this school year, Erece concluded his last and final Palarong Pambansa participation with a gold medal in Taekwondo Kyorugi, capping off years of hard work, discipline, and perseverance.

Having started taekwondo at the age of five, Joshua built an impressive career highlighted by multiple gold medals, MVP recognitions, and championship titles. Despite facing setbacks along the way, he remained determined, using every challenge as motivation to come back stronger.

As he bids farewell to the Palarong Pambansa, Erece expressed his heartfelt gratitude to his family, coaches, friends, and supporters who stood by him throughout his journey. Above all, he thanked Almighty God for His countless blessings, guidance, and strength during every competition.

With his inspiring message to aspiring athletesโ€”"Love your sport and believe in yourself"โ€”Joshua leaves behind a legacy of excellence, resilience, and faith as he prepares for a new chapter in college and beyond.

The Department of Education-Cordillera Administrative Region extends its deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues of veteran community journalist Mar Oclaman, who passed away while covering the opening of classes at Manuel Roxas Elementary School, Baguio City on June 8, 2026.

We are profoundly grateful for his unwavering support in advancing educational advocacies and for helping bring the stories of our learners, teachers, and schools to the wider community.

As we mourn his loss, we also honor a life devoted to service, truth, and community.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.

Journalists typically spend the first day of classes covering schools and providing the public with a glimpse of conditions on the ground. But for a veteran community journalist in Baguio, it would be his last assignment. | Aldwin Quitasol
