DA-PCC expands herd buildup initiative in GIDAs through i-PEACE Program

The Department of Agriculture-Philippine Carabao Center at University of Southern Mindanao (DA-PCC at USM) entrusted five pregnant carabaos to the Assumption Farmers Association of Koronadal City under the DA’s i-PEACE Program in support of the government’s peace and development initiatives in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs).

The turnover forms part of the Carabao Herd Buildup (CHB) Project of DA-PCC and was among the highlights of the Farmers’ and Fisherfolk’s Month celebration during the “Pista sa Nayon” held at the DA Regional Field Office XII (DA-RFO XII) on May 14.

DA Assistant Secretary James Layug said the program is being implemented under the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) to bring peace and development opportunities to formerly conflict-affected communities through livelihood assistance.

“Isinusulong natin ang programang ito dahil ito ang inisyatiba ng NTF-ELCAC kung saan nais nating magkaroon ng peace and development sa pamamagitan ng livelihood programs,” Layug said.

He emphasized the importance of properly managing the dairy buffaloes to ensure the continuity and expansion of the program for the benefit of more communities in Assumption, Koronadal City, and other GIDA barangays across the country.

DA-RFO XII Regional Executive Director John B. Pascual reaffirmed the agency’s continuing support for the agriculture sector through inclusive programs, modern technologies, accessible markets, and responsive government services.

He said the celebration was dedicated to farmers and fisherfolk whose hard work ensures food security for Filipino families.

Meanwhile, DA-PCC at USM Center Director Geoffray R. Atok said the initiative proves that even in far-flung communities, dairy production can become a pathway toward progress and improved livelihoods.

“Patunay na kahit sa pinakamalayong lugar, ang bawat patak ng gatas ay maaaring maging daan tungo sa pag-unlad,” Atok said.

Furthermore, the initiative supports the government’s Whole-of-Nation Approach to development by promoting sustainable peace and security, protecting Indigenous People, and strengthening the agricultural productivity and livelihoods of farmer-beneficiaries through inclusive, people-centered programs.

DA-PCC at USM is now DOT-accredited farm tourism camp

The DA – Philippine Carabao Center at University of Southern Mindanao (DA-PCC at USM) is now accredited as a Farm Tourism Camp (Day Farm) after meeting the national standards for operating a farm tourism destination.

The certificate of accreditation granted by the Department of Tourism was issued last April 29 in pursuant to the provisions of Republic Act No. 9593, or the Tourism Act of 2009.

DA-PCC at USM Center Director Geoffray R. Atok said the accreditation strengthens its role as a research station for carabao-based agricultural innovation, dairy enterprise development, and public engagement in Mindanao.

“Our center highlighted the importance of putting “agriculture and tourism in one frame,” showcasing how farm tourism can help promote awareness on the Carabao Development Program while creating additional opportunities for education, livelihood, and local economic growth” Director Atok said.

For years, DA-PCC at USM has served as a hub for research, technology demonstration, dairy production, training, and extension services benefiting farmers, cooperatives, students, local government units, and partner organizations across the region.

Through the accreditation, these services are further strengthened and aligned with tourism standards, allowing the center to better cater to educational tours, benchmarking activities, immersion programs, and stakeholder engagements related to buffalo production and dairy development.

The farm tourism destination features dairy buffalo production systems, forage development areas, dairy processing initiatives, and learning sites that promote sustainable livestock agriculture and entrepreneurship. Visitors will also have the opportunity to experience firsthand the importance of the carabao industry in food security and rural development.

Meanwhile, the Local Government Unit of Kabacan led by Mayor Evangeline P. Guzman expressed support for the initiative and emphasized the importance of supporting local dairy initiatives, especially with the upcoming opening of Kabacan Dairy Box to the public.

Mas pinalakas na industriya ng kalabaw, tatalakayin sa 12th NCC sa Sorsogon

Muling magtitipon ang mga pangunahing stakeholders ng industriya ng kalabaw sa ika-12 National Carabao Conference (NCC) na gaganapin sa Mayo 20–22, 2026 sa Sorsogon City, ang tinaguriang “Gateway to Southern Luzon.”

Pangungunahan ang nasabing kumperensya ng Gubat St. Anthony Cooperative (GSAC), katuwang ang National Carabao Industry Stakeholders Association (NCISA) at ang DA-Philippine Carabao Center (DA-PCC). Layunin nitong pag-isahin ang mga magsasaka, kooperatiba, eksperto, at iba pang stakeholders upang talakayin ang mga hamon, oportunidad, at direksyon ng industriya ng kalabaw. Sa panahon ng tagtuyot o kakulangan ng damo, hindi titigil ang produksyon kung handa ang magsasaka. Sa pamamagitan ng silage making, napapanatiling sariwa at masustansya ang pakain ng ating mga alagang hayop, kahit anong panahon pa yan.

Isang hakbang tungo sa mas matatag at produktibong pag-aalaga ng kalabaw!
