Halfway through Ocean Month, we are reminded of a growing crisis we can no longer ignore: plastic waste. Its production has become so widespread that we often lose sight of where it ends up after disposal.

More than 9 billion tons have been produced since the 1950s, and that number has doubled over the past 50 years. Much of this persists where our natural resources are found—on land, in rivers, and in our oceans.

At current rates, the amount of plastic entering the ocean is projected to significantly increase in the coming years. By 2050, plastic in the ocean could rival or even exceed the total weight of fish.

This is not just a single waste issue; it is a reminder that we need to act and take a stand against plastic. Reducing plastic use, improving waste management, and shifting to sustainable alternatives must become part of our everyday choices and collective responsibility.

Working hand-in-hand with our Municipal Tourism Officers, the Provincial Tourism, Culture, and Arts Council, and partners from both the public and private sectors, the workshop focused on reviewing, updating, and enhancing our local tourism code to ensure it stands in perfect alignment with regulatory measures and national standards while championing sustainable management for our growing tourism initiatives.

We were deeply honored to have 𝐌𝐫. 𝐑𝐞𝐲𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐨 as our esteemed resource person, who expertly guided us in crafting the "Provincial Tourism Code” of the Province of Davao Occidental alongside his secretariat, 𝐌𝐬. 𝐈𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐚𝐞 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐳.

Thank you to everyone who contributed their time and expertise! We are one step closer to a more organized, sustainable, and thriving tourism for all our municipalities.

We are overflowing with gratitude as we wrap up a spectacular three-day celebration of Buwan ng Kalutong Pilipino (Filipino Food Month Celebration) at the Abreeza Mall Activity Center, Davao City!
