Did you know that Eveline Chainus Guirey is recognized as the first-ever Igorot beauty queen in Philippine history?
Born in Gumatdang, Itogon, Benguet, Eveline became a celebrated cultural icon during the early 1900s. At only 13 years old, she was crowned Queen of the 1915 Benguet Carnival, a major event connected to the famous Manila Carnival during the American colonial era.
Her beauty, confidence, and graceful presence quickly captured public attention. Eveline proudly wore traditional Igorot attire adorned with native jewelry and cultural ornaments, introducing the rich heritage of the Cordilleras to wider Filipino society. At a time when indigenous peoples were rarely represented in national events, her appearance became a powerful symbol of pride and identity for the Igorot people.
Thousands of spectators admired her elegant look, long black hair, morena complexion, and dignified bearing. During the Manila Carnival, Eveline and her royal court became among the most talked-about attractions because of their unique mountain attire and cultural presentation.
One of the most remarkable parts of her appearance was her beautiful tiara made from copper and silver plates with a ruby centerpiece, symbolizing royalty blended with indigenous craftsmanship.
Aside from her beauty, Eveline was also admired for her intelligence and promise as a young woman. She studied in Baguio and later continued her education in Manila, showing that Igorot women could excel not only in beauty and culture but also in education and leadership.
Today, Eveline Chainus Guirey remains an important figure in Cordilleran history. She is remembered as a trailblazer who proudly showcased Igorot culture and helped pave the way for greater recognition of indigenous beauty, identity, and representation in the Philippines.
