The Philippines through the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Forest Management Bureau joins the international community in celebrating the International Day of Forests (IDF) every March 21. The International Day of Forests is a global observance being held annually to raise awareness on the importance of forests to people and their vital role in poverty eradication, environmental sustainability, and food security. Sustainable management of all types of forests are at the heart of addressing challenges of conflict-affected, developing, and developed countries, for the benefit of current and future generations.

For this year, the theme of the celebration of the International Day of Forests is "Forests and Health."

The key messages for this year's theme are the following:

1. Forests are a vital source of food and nutrition.
2. Forests are natural pharmacies.
3. Healthy forests protect us from diseases.
4. Forests boost our mental and physical health.
5. Forests play a central role in combating the biggest health threat facing humanity: climate change.
6. Forests are under threat and need our help.

In support to the , let us honor our FORESTS' contribution in our HEALTH and in the health of our planet by striving to maintin and protect our forest in return.

The United Nations General Assembly has declared March 1 as World Seagrass Day in order to raise awareness of the importance of seagrass and alert governments to the enhancement and conservation of seagrass meadows worldwide.
Our seagrass ecosystem has several benefits not only to us humans but also to other marine life organisms. Here is the list of the benefits our seagrasses offer:
1. Source of food;
2. Serves as nursing/breeding grounds;
3. Acts as a carbon sink; and
4. Natural sediment filters.

Seagrass protects coasts.
Seagrass meadows act as buffer for coastal communities from the full impact of waves. Their extensive and complex root system protect coastlines from erosion.
Interestingly, seagrass meadows can also help build and maintain coral reef islands. It was discovered in a recent study that the total annual sediment production of a 1.1 square kilometers of seagrass is 762,000 kg, of which 482,000 is enough for island-building.
Seagrass acts as a natural water filter as well. They improve water quality by trapping nutrients, pollutants and dissolved inorganic, and organic nutrients from the water column.
These ecosystem services of seagrasses are what we need to appreciate more nowadays especially with the rapid coastal development and inevitable climate change impacts.

The Forest Management Bureau continues to promote an alternative way of getting hugs this Valentine's Day by joining the Tree Hugging Day Campaign.

The Tree Hugging Campaign aims to promote the social/health benefits that we can derive from nurturing trees/forests, and raise awareness of the importance of the tree-hugging movement.

Everyone is invited to participate in this campaign by following this procedure:

1. Like the FMB page
2. Share publication material from the FMB page and IG
3. Take a selfie/group photo showing a creative way of hugging a tree (plus points if a featured tree is an indigenous species)

World Wetlands Day is celebrated annually on February 2 to raise global awareness about the important role of wetlands for people and our planet in order to reverse their rapid loss and encourage actions to conserve and restore them. The theme for the is โ€œ๐™„๐™ฉโ€™๐™จ ๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ข๐™š ๐™›๐™ค๐™ง ๐™’๐™š๐™ฉ๐™ก๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™๐™š๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™ค๐™ง๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ" which highlights the urgent need to prioritize wetland restoration. The theme is anchored on the 2021-2030 UN Decade on Ecosystems Restoration.

Wetlands are disappearing three times faster than forests. According to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, more than 35% of wetlands worldwide have been degraded or lost since 1970.

Let's work together to preserve and protect these precious resources. Now is the time to act, restore, and save our degraded wetlands!

Lets learn about Leopard Cats

Here in the Philippines the Leopard Cat is our only wild cat species and the largest true mammalian carnivore, despite it being no bigger than a house cat.
We have two Leopard Cats in the Philippines, based in the Visayas and Palawan, but there is still contention as to where they originally came from and who their closest cousins are.

We are just happy to have the Visayan Leopard Cat as part of our amazing West Visayan wildlife.
We hope you love it just as much.

If you would like to know more about the Visayan Leopard Cat or other wildlife of the West Visayas;
- Visit us online at www.talarak.org
- Visit us in person at Negros Forest Park, Bacolod City, and see this species up close.

Have you seen a Philippine cockatoo?

If you have encountered this bird in the wild particularly at the Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary, you are lucky because the population of these majestic birds has rapidly declined.

The Philippine cockatoo, locally called as katala, is endemic to the Philippines. Aside from its distinct call, the cockatoo is easily identified by the red feathers around its vent. These birds are able to utilize regenerating forests to forage and use suitable trees for breeding purposes.

Let's save our protected areas that provide a home for these critically endangered animals. Tara! Pasyal na sa Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary!
