The Provincial Tourism, Culture, and the Arts Office of Lanao del Sur successfully conducted a Site and Market Assessment Tool for Tourist Attractions (SMATTA) in Municipality of Picong, Lanao del Sur, in coordination with the Local Government Unit (LGU) and with the full support of the Municipal Mayor, Hon. Mesron D. Balindong. This activity forms part of the Provinceโs continuing efforts to systematically assess, develop, and strengthen local tourism destinations, ensuring their readiness for sustainable promotion and investment.
The SMATTA visit aimed to evaluate the existing tourism assets of the municipality, identify potential sites for development, and determine appropriate strategies to enhance their marketability and competitiveness. Through this initiative, both the Provincial Office and the LGU sought to align local tourism plans with provincial and regional development frameworks, while also promoting community-based and environmentally responsible tourism practices.
Representing the Provincial Tourism, Culture, and the Arts Office were Mr. Mohammad Kouzbary Said, Ms. Saimah Naik, Mr. Naim Jaain, Mr. Wesham A. Abedin, Ms. Faisah M. Bantugan, and Mr. Ahmad Nour-Al-Dinn Tamano Jr., the Provincial Tourism Focal,
who led the technical assessment and facilitated discussions throughout the activity.
The Local Government Unit of Picong actively participated in the assessment through the presence and support of key municipal officials and personnel, including the Municipal Planning and Development Coordinator, Municipal Engineer, Municipal Agriculture Officer, Municipal Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy Officer, Municipal Tourism Officer, and administrative personnel. Their involvement ensured that relevant local data, insights, and development priorities were effectively integrated into the assessment process.
The SMATTA visit concluded with collaborative discussions and initial recommendations geared toward enhancing the tourism potential of Picong. These include improving site accessibility, strengthening local tourism management, and promotional development. The initiative underscores the shared commitment of the Provincial Government and the Municipality of Picong to advance tourism as a driver of inclusive growth, cultural preservation, and sustainable development in Lanao del Sur.
