PNP COMPLETES ZAMBOANGA SCHOOL SHOOTING PROBE, FILES APPROPRIATE COMPLAINT

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has completed its investigation into the August 18 shooting incident at a private school in Barangay Tumaga, Zamboanga City, establishing the circumstances that led to the tragedy and filing the appropriate complaint based on the evidence gathered.

The incident resulted in the deaths of two students and injuries to another. The investigation, led by the Police Regional Office 9 through a Special Investigation Task Group, brought together investigators and forensic personnel who examined witness accounts, CCTV footage, physical and digital evidence, school records, and firearm-related evidence to piece together what happened.

Based on the findings, investigators found no evidence that the incident was carried out as part of a conspiracy involving any group, organization, or other individuals. They also found no established school-related or personal grievance that could sufficiently explain the shooting. The investigation, however, identified prior preparation and exposure to violent online material as among the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The probe also showed that gaps in firearm safekeeping and accountability allowed unauthorized access to the fi****ms used, while security deficiencies in the school, particularly in entry and exit screening, contributed to the circumstances of the incident.

With these findings, a complaint for Reckless Imprudence Resulting in Homicide and Physical Injury was filed before the proper prosecutorial authority against the registered owner of the fi****ms used in the incident and a school security personnel, based on the evidence established during the investigation.

Chief PNP Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. said the PNP's duty was not only to determine what happened but also to ensure that the investigation was conducted fairly and responsibly.

“We owe it to the families and to the school community to get the facts right. Hindi puwedeng puro assumptions. We follow the evidence, respect due process, and let the proper legal process determine accountability. At the same time, we have to learn from what happened and close the gaps that may put others at risk,” PGen Nartatez said.

He also reminded firearm owners to exercise greater care in securing their weapons and urged schools and security personnel to regularly review access controls and screening measures, while encouraging parents and the public to promptly raise concerns involving threats, violent behavior, or other warning signs.

The completed investigation reflects the PNP's continuing effort to strengthen evidence-based and responsive police operations under its Focused Agenda, particularly Enhanced Managing Police Operations, in support of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s call for accountable and effective public service. It likewise reinforces the commitment of the Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat, at Nararamdaman.

LOOK: In line with the PNP Focused Agenda on Community Support, under the leadership of PBGEN ROGELIO Z RAYMUNDO, JR, Director, PNP-EOD/K9 Group, and under the supervision of PMAJ ROI ROBIN A URBINA, Officer-in-Charge, RECU 6, personnel of RECU 6 responded to a roadside situation involving an immobilized vehicle with its wheel stuck in a canal.

The team, together with nearby civilians, immediately rendered assistance by manually pushing the vehicle out of the canal to a safer position. Through their collective effort, the vehicle was successfully moved, normal traffic flow was restored, and no injuries or damages were reported.

This simple act reflects our unwavering commitment to public service and bayanihan, demonstrating that protecting our citizens goes beyond routine patrol duties to genuine, compassionate care. PNP FOILS POTENTIAL THREAT, RECOVERS IEDs AND FIREARM IN SARANGANI

The Philippine National Police (PNP) recovered two improvised explosive devices (IEDs), a caliber .38 revolver, and three rounds of ammunition following information provided by a former member of a Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) in Malapatan, Sarangani Province on August 22, 2026.

The information was voluntarily disclosed by alias “Cavite,” a former CTG member who surrendered to authorities on July 24, 2026. Acting on the information, joint personnel of the Police Regional Office 12 and the Sarangani Police Provincial Office proceeded to the reported location in Barangay Patag, Malapatan, where the items were successfully recovered.

The firearm and ammunition were secured for proper documentation and disposition, while the recovered IEDs were placed under the custody of the police explosive and canine unit for appropriate handling and disposal.

Chief, PNP Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. said the recovery demonstrates the value of timely information and the importance of maintaining the confidence of communities in law enforcement.

“Kapag may impormasyon na makakatulong para maiwasan ang isang panganib, mahalagang maaksyunan ito agad at maayos. Our job is not only to respond when something happens, but to do what we can to prevent harm before it happens,” PGen Nartatez said.

The PNP said the operation reflects its continuing effort to strengthen preventive and intelligence-led policing under the PNP Focused Agenda, particularly Enhanced Managing Police Operations, while ensuring that recovered fi****ms, ammunition, and explosive materials are properly secured and handled.

The Chief, PNP likewise underscored that the PNP’s public safety efforts remain aligned with the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., particularly in strengthening peace and order and protecting communities through responsive and responsible policing.

The PNP continues to encourage the public to report information concerning unattended fi****ms, explosives, or other items that may pose a threat to community safety through the appropriate authorities. Such information will be handled responsibly and acted upon in accordance with established procedures.
