Antiqueño bags awards in international environmental competition
Ralph Jasil Escanillas, a resident of San Fernando, San Jose de Buenavista Antique and a second-year student studying Bachelor of Science Fisheries at the University of the Philippines-Visayas (UPV), showcased his talent, knowledge, and skills during the Youth Environment Camp in Singapore from November 20–26, 2022. The camp focused on addressing environmental issues in Asia.
His team got the first place in Environmental Research Paper and second place award in Environmental Research Poster Competition.
During his whole six-day stay in Singapore, he was able to travel all around the country and learned how the Singaporeans mitigate carbon emissions.
On their last day, they presented another research topic from their learnings. His group presented it to the faculty of the National University of Singapore and other coaches who were present.
Now that Escanillas and his team are back in the country, they are trying to apply their research paper entitled, “Carbon Sequestration and Income Potential of Gardening in Pockets of Urban Households”. They first formed their research using Iloilo City as an example of a highly urbanized city.
He said that he could start applying their study here in San Jose de Buenavista by replicating their research in utilizing urban spaces, wherein people plant trees to track their carbon emissions and carbon footprints. Afterwards the trees they planted can be sold.
"We have to be sustainable in our approaches, especially in reducing our carbon footprints. Bisan gamay lang nga impact kag if ever we can inspire others to do the same, we can magnify that effect, and we can create a large impact on the province and the country," he added.
