BILL LOWERING OPTIONAL RETIREMENT FOR GOV'T WORKERS FROM AGE 60 TO 56 APPROVED BY PANEL

House Committee on Government Enterprises has approved House Bill 207, which aims to lower the optional retirement age for government workers, including teachers, from 60 to 56 years. Co-authored by Representatives Antonio Tinio and Renee Louise Co, the bill seeks to amend Section 13-A of the Government Service Insurance System Act of 1997. Tinio described the approval as a vital move towards a humane retirement policy, addressing the concerns of teachers who often continue working despite health issues. The proposed legislation would still maintain the compulsory retirement age, allowing employees to retire optionally at 56 after years of service while calling for expedited approval in the House and a Senate counterpart measure.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer, a specialized branch of the World Health Organization, has classified processed meats such as ham, bacon, salami, and frankfurts as Group 1 Carcinogens. This category indicates that there is sufficient scientific evidence linking regular consumption of processed meat to cancer development, particularly Colorectal Cancer. The classification was based on extensive epidemiological studies and research conducted across multiple populations worldwide.

Scientists explain that processed meats may increase cancer risk due to compounds formed during preservation methods such as smoking, curing, salting, or adding chemical preservatives like nitrites. Some studies have also found associations between high processed meat consumption and an elevated risk of stomach cancer. However, health experts emphasize that the classification reflects the strength of evidence, not the level of risk itself. Moderate consumption does not guarantee cancer development, but long-term dietary habits can influence overall risk.

Nutrition specialists encourage balanced eating patterns that prioritize fresh and minimally processed foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein sources. Public health experts stress that reducing processed meat intake, alongside maintaining physical activity and healthy lifestyle habits, may help lower long-term cancer risk and support overall well-being.
