My heart is a mess right now. I read this again after 5 years.
I don't even know how to explain what I'm feeling after reading this again.
On one hand, I'm so, so happy. On the other, my chest literally hurts.
That moment when Shi Yi finds out that Zhousheng Chen—this man who was all about science, logic, facts—knelt in front of a Buddha and begged for her to wake up? I felt that in my gut. And then she says, "Your words, they're making my heart really ache," and he just laughs. Like it's nothing. Like he didn't just confess to basically turning his whole worldview upside down because he couldn't bear to lose her.
But here's what got me. She feels guilty. She thinks she made him suffer an injustice. She loved him so much that she wished he never had to change for her. She wanted him to stay him—unburdened, free.
And he just teases her about their three kids like the overgrown child he is inside. Like, "Okay, mom, save some of that worry for the kids."
That's when I laughed through the tears.
And that last line? "He has at last... let me off, for once." I don't know why that hit so hard. Maybe because it's so human. It's like the universe finally said, "Okay, you've suffered enough. You can rest now."
I don't know. I'm just sitting here feeling everything at once. Happy for them. Sad for what they went through. Grateful they made it out the other side.
If you've read this story, you know exactly what I mean. If you haven't... I don't even know how to describe it. It's just one of those loves that makes you believe in fate. And in second chances.
Anyway. I'm going to go stare at the wall for a bit. 😭❤️
