Twenty-three years of service is more than a measure of time but a testament to commitment, resilience, growth and heart devoted to public service. For Maria Kristine Sulaik, every year in the Department of the Interior and Local Government has been a chapter of learning, overcoming challenges, building meaningful relationships and finding purpose in serving local communities.

On October 1, 2026, Ms. Sulaik will mark her 23rd year of dedicated service with the DILG. Her journey began in 2003 when she joined DILG General Santos City as Clerk. Before entering government service, she earned her Bachelorโ€™s Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Southeastern Philippines in 2001 and passed the Licensure Examination for Teachers in the same year.

In 2007, she was reassigned to the DILG Regional Office where she gained broadened exposure to the Departmentโ€™s programs and operations. The experience expanded her knowledge and strengthened her skills, preparing her for greater responsibilities in the field of local governance.

Her career continued to grow when she was promoted to Local Government Operations Officer II and assigned to DILG Sarangani Province. She completed her LGOO training in 2014 and a year later, served as OIC-Municipal Local Government Operations Officer in the Municipality of Malapatan. These experiences strengthened her understanding of local governance and prepared her for the challenges of fieldwork.

In 2016, she was promoted to LGOO III and assigned to DILG General Santos City, where she became actively involved in the monitoring and evaluation of various DILG programs, particularly those concerning women and children and other initiatives requiring regular assessment and technical assistance.

Seven years later, she was promoted to LGOO V, a position she has held for four years. In her current role, she handles programs concerning Peace and Order, Anti-illegal Drugs, Violence Against Women and Children and other DILG programs requiring monitoring and evaluation. She also provides technical assistance to local government unit and barangays in implementing programs and initiatives that promote effective and responsive local governance.

Through the years, her journey has not always been easy. There have been demanding responsibilities, difficult situations and challenges that tested her patience and perseverance. Yet, each experience has strengthened her resolve and deepened her commitment to public service.

From a Clerk to a Local Government Operations Officer, every position has brought valuable lessons and opportunities to make a difference. Her 23 years of service reflect not only professional growth but also a continuing commitment to the DILGโ€™s ideals of being Matino, Mahusay at Maasahan.

As she looks ahead, Ms. Sulaik remains grateful for the people who have been part of her journey. The colleagues, mentors, partners, LGU, barangays and communities she has had the privilege to serve. She hopes to continue learning, growing and contributing to the Departmentโ€™s mission of strengthening local governance.

READ | DILG calls for unified front vs fake news, misinformation amid crises

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Thursday called for a unified government effort to curb the spread of fake news and misinformation, stressing that accurate, timely, and verified information is critical to preventing fear and confusion during crises.

Speaking during the Kapihan sa Manila held at Prince Hotel in Ermita, Manila, DILG Undersecretary for Public Affairs and Communication Ronaldo C. Puno said combating fake news and misinformation is a shared responsibility of government agencies, the media, and the public, particularly during high-tension incidents such as the recent school shooting in Zamboanga City.

โ€œWe really need a concerted effort to quash fake news,โ€ Puno said, underscoring the need for the DILG and other government agencies to work together to ensure that only verified and factual information reaches the public.

He said the school shooting incident also highlighted the need to continuously improve government communication and information dissemination mechanisms during crises.

โ€œHindi tayo sanay sa mga pangyayaring ganyan (school shooting incidents). But it does call to refine processes and make things better,โ€ Puno said.

Hours after the shooting incident at Ateneo de Zamboanga University, videos purportedly showing injured school security guards circulated widely on social media, sparking confusion and fueling unverified reports that the two guards had been killed.

Puno urged the public to rely on official and verified information from credible government authorities, noting that the Philippine National Police (PNP) exercises caution in releasing information while reports are still being validated.

โ€œGiven the tense situation, given how quickly things progressed, nag-iingat din ang pulis. They want to share the information as quickly as possible, but they want to share verified information,โ€ he said.

Puno also cited the DILGโ€™s immediate response following the Zamboanga incident, with Secretary Jonvic Remulla holding press conferences to provide the media and the public with verified information as it became available.

โ€œShortly after the Zamboanga situation, he (SILG Jonvic Remulla) came up with a statement right away to try to give us as many details as possible,โ€ Puno said.

The DILG likewise reminded the public to verify information before sharing it, particularly during emergencies and other rapidly developing situations where unverified posts can quickly create fear, confusion, and unnecessary alarm.

The Department stressed that responsible information sharing, coupled with timely and coordinated communication from government, is crucial to ensuring that the public receives facts rather than speculation when accurate information matters most.
