DID YOU KNOW | On October 21, 1972, Muslim Independence Movement (MIM) rebels numbering 400 attacked Marawi City, held hostage hundreds of students from the Mindanao State University, and occupied the entire city with the exception of the Lanao Del Sur Provincial Constabulary Command under Lt Col Rogaciano Espiritu. Despite being surrounded, the Philippine Constabulary Provincial Headquarters was able to repulse repeated attacks, but they needed reinforcement.
The 26th Infantry Battalion which was stationed in Kapatagan, Lanao del Sur sent reinforcement to the beleaguered PC soldiers. A platoon led by then Second Lieutenant Edilberto Adan with a mounted 106 recoilless rifle was dispatched, joined by PC soldiers led by Colonel Efren Zafra.
The main attack on Camp Amai Pakpak (formerly Camp Keithley) started at 2:00 a.m on October 22, 1972, and lasted until 7:00 in the morning. The following morning, four MIM "Blackshirts" rebels lay dead in front of the 26IB defense sector. Camp Amai Pakpak was saved but was subjected to sporadic attacks. The Marines liberated the MSU student hostages after a series of gun battles while the rebels dispersed to the hinterlands of Lanao Sur and Lanao Norte.
With reinforcements arriving from the 4th Infantry Division and the Philippine Marine Battalion, the battle to liberate Marawi only lasted for three days.
The October 21, 1972, attack on Marawi, is regarded by historians as the official start of the Mindanao secessionist war.
