Northern Iloilo State University (NISU) officially launched its university-wide celebration of ASEAN Month 2026 this August, joining the nationwide observance pursuant to Proclamation No. 282, s. 2018, which declares August of every year as ASEAN Month in the Philippines.

The celebration formally commenced during the universityโ€™s flag-raising ceremony, highlighted by the simultaneous raising of the ASEAN flags across all NISU campuses. The synchronized ceremony served as a powerful symbol of unity, demonstrating that despite being geographically situated in different communities, the NISU campuses stand together as one university in promoting ASEAN awareness, friendship, cooperation, and regional solidarity.

The simultaneous display of the ASEAN flags also reflected NISUโ€™s commitment to strengthening its international and regional outlook. As one NISU community, students, faculty, and staff were reminded of the shared values and aspirations that connect the Philippines with its fellow ASEAN Member States.

Carrying the theme โ€œ๐“๐“ช๐“ฟ๐“ฒ๐“ฐ๐“ช๐“ฝ๐“ฒ๐“ท๐“ฐ ๐“ž๐“พ๐“ป ๐“•๐“พ๐“ฝ๐“พ๐“ป๐“ฎ, ๐“ฃ๐“ธ๐“ฐ๐“ฎ๐“ฝ๐“ฑ๐“ฎ๐“ป,โ€ this yearโ€™s celebration seeks to deepen the NISU communityโ€™s appreciation and understanding of ASEAN and its diverse cultures, traditions, identities, and shared aspirations. It also highlights the importance of regional cooperation in the political, economic, socio-cultural, and educational spheres, particularly in preparing young people to become globally aware and culturally responsive citizens.

One of the major activities of the celebration is the ๐“๐“ข๐“”๐“๐“ ๐“ข๐“ฝ๐“ช๐“ถ๐“น ๐“’๐“ช๐“ป๐“ญ ๐“’๐“ฑ๐“ช๐“ต๐“ต๐“ฎ๐“ท๐“ฐ๐“ฎ, an interactive campus-wide activity that invites students to embark on a virtual journey across the ASEAN region. Through their ASEAN โ€œpassport,โ€ students will visit designated NISU offices representing the different ASEAN Member States, learn about their respective cultures and identities, and collect stamps or signatures as they complete their journey. Beyond being a fun and engaging activity, the challenge encourages students to discover the richness and diversity of Southeast Asia while strengthening their appreciation of regional identity and cooperation.

Adding color and creativity to the celebration are the ๐“๐“ข๐“”๐“๐“ ๐“•๐“ป๐“ฒ๐“ฎ๐“ท๐“ญ๐“ผ๐“ฑ๐“ฒ๐“น ๐“ฆ๐“ช๐“ต๐“ต ๐“ช๐“ท๐“ญ ๐“๐“ข๐“”๐“๐“-๐“ฝ๐“ฑ๐“ฎ๐“ถ๐“ฎ๐“ญ ๐“Ÿ๐“ฑ๐“ธ๐“ฝ๐“ธ๐“ซ๐“ธ๐“ธ๐“ฝ๐“ฑ, which are open to students, faculty, staff, and other members of the NISU community. The Friendship Wall provides a space where participants can write and share their messages of friendship, solidarity, unity, appreciation, and hopes for ASEAN, creating a collective expression of NISUโ€™s support for a stronger and more connected Southeast Asian community. Meanwhile, the ASEAN Photobooth allows members of the university community to celebrate ASEAN through photographs featuring regional symbols, cultural elements, and other ASEAN-inspired designs.

To further promote cultural understanding through film, NISU will also hold an ๐“๐“ข๐“”๐“๐“ ๐“•๐“ฒ๐“ต๐“ถ ๐“ฅ๐“ฒ๐“ฎ๐”€๐“ฒ๐“ท๐“ฐ every Friday afternoon throughout August at the NISU Gymnasium. The featured films will showcase stories, cultures, traditions, experiences, and perspectives from the ASEAN region, providing students and other members of the university community with an engaging way to learn about the people and cultures that make up Southeast Asia.

Through these activities, ASEAN Month at NISU goes beyond a commemorative celebration. It provides opportunities for the university community to learn, participate, connect, and celebrate the diversity that binds ASEAN together.

As NISU joins the rest of the country in celebrating ASEAN Month, the university reaffirms its commitment to fostering an inclusive, globally minded, and culturally responsive academic community.

Alindog, Information Officer II, who actively took part in the intensive two-day learning program alongside internationalization officers, and higher education representatives from across the country.

KAPIT-BISIG 2026 was designed to strengthen the internationalization capabilities of Philippine higher education institutions by providing participants with the knowledge, skills, and strategic perspectives necessary to build globally competitive and internationally engaged universities.

Throughout the training, participants explored key concepts and best practices aimed at strengthening institutional understanding of higher education internationalization, enhancing the competencies of international relations officers and administrators, developing practical approaches to partnership building and international engagement, promoting peer learning among Philippine higher education institutions, and formulating institutional action plans that support sustainable internationalization initiatives.

Healthy employees, stronger university. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›

At Northern Iloilo State University, every flag-raising and flag-retreat ceremony now ends with a short physical exerciseโ€”an initiative that promotes wellness, boosts morale, and reminds us that taking care of our people is just as important as achieving our goals.

This simple yet meaningful practice reflects NISU's commitment to UN Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, fostering a workplace culture where health, balance, and productivity go hand in hand.

Because a healthier community builds a stronger institutionโ€”one step, one stretch, and one day at a time. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’ช
