From the very first drops of colostrum—a thick, golden elixir loaded with antibodies that shield newborns against disease—breastmilk acts as a biological powerhouse. Interestingly, when a mother falls ill, her body immediately synthesizes specific antibodies into her milk to combat that exact infection. This real-time defense mechanism creates what health experts call “the most personalized form of medicine” on the planet, dynamically adapting to a baby’s changing environment and health (UNICEF, n.d.).

However, despite its biological elegance, every parent knows a quiet truth: "natural" does not mean easy.

From late-night latches and cluster feeding to pump parts taking over the kitchen counters, nursing is a learned skill for both parent and baby. The biggest myth out there? That parents have to do it all alone. But here’s the truth: feeding a baby takes a village—at home, in public, and at work.

At home, a mother's primary support network plays a crucial role in maintaining her breastfeeding journey. Practical help from partners or relatives—such as managing chores or minding the infant—provides vital rest, enabling mothers to navigate early feeding challenges (Zeng et al., 2024). When family members educate themselves on infant feeding behavior like cluster feeding rather than pressuring mothers to introduce bottles, the domestic environment shifts from stressful to supportive. Strong familial and paternal support directly enhances a mother's breastfeeding self-efficacy, significantly improving nursing duration and confidence (Zeng et al., 2024)

Public community support provides parents with safety and social acceptance, allowing them to feed their infants in shared spaces such as parks or restaurants without fear of judgment or harassment. In the Philippines, Republic Act No. 10028, or the “Expanded Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2009”, further supports lactating mothers by mandating the establishment of breastfeeding rooms or lactation stations in both public places and private establishments. Lactation facilities must guarantee basic hygiene and privacy while offering an aesthetically pleasing, comfortable space for mothers (Sağlam et al., 2024). These spaces offer mothers a safe, convenient, and supportive environment for breastfeeding or pumping milk.

At work, community means having supportive policies, understanding others’ needs, and creating a fair environment for everyone. Returning to a job while breastfeeding requires more than just goodwill; it demands quiet, private, and hygienic pumping rooms, dedicated break times, and flexible schedules. Under RA 10028, lactating employees are entitled to breastfeeding or lactation breaks of at least 40 minutes for every eight-hour working period, in addition to regular meal breaks. When employers and colleagues actively protect a parent’s right to express milk without penalty or subtle professional resentment, they acknowledge that supporting working parents is a collective investment in the health of the next generation. Studies demonstrate that employees provided with dedicated workplace lactation accommodations are significantly more likely to sustain breastfeeding after returning to work (Ranjitha et al., 2023).

Globally, that village is slowly expanding, and the numbers reflect it:
● Exclusive Breastfeeding: Rates for infants in their first six months rose from roughly 37% in 2012 to over 47% today (WHO, 2026).
● Extended Breastfeeding: Over the last five years, the prevalence of breastfeeding up to two years of age climbed from 38% to 50% (WHO, 2026).

According to the World Health Organization (2026), these global gains demonstrate that sustained investments in family policies and support programs genuinely work. However, much more needs to be done to address the gaps in breastfeeding programs and skilled support.

Ultimately, the journey of feeding a child defies a one-size-fits-all formula. Breastfeeding requires a community effort, and it is no easy feat! Feeding your baby is personal, and you deserve a community that backs you up every step.

𝗦𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗚𝟰 𝗘𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
25-26 August 2026

El Salvador City commenced the Search for Best Garden of Go, Grow and Glow (G4) Evaluation on 25 August 2026, as part of the city’s continuing efforts to strengthen household food and nutrition security through sustainable household food production.

The evaluation focused on the extent to which participating gardens contribute to the availability, accessibility, and utilization of diverse and nutritious food for household consumption. It also provides an opportunity to assess and document good practices in household gardening that support nutrition-sensitive agriculture, dietary diversity, and improved access to nutritious food.

For the first two days of the evaluation, the City Nutrition Evaluation Team conducted field visits and assessed participating G4 gardens in the following barangays:

Through the G4 initiative, the City continues to promote sustainable household food production as a nutrition-sensitive strategy, encouraging families to grow and utilize a variety of food crops that contribute to healthier and more diverse diets.

As the country observes National Breastfeeding Month this August, the latest national nutrition data tell a story of both progress and remaining challenges. More Filipino infants are being exclusively breastfed, and more young children are continuing to receive breast milk into their second year of life. However, for many newborns, breastfeeding still does not begin within the critical first hour after birth.

This progress was reflected in the 2025 Updating of the Nutritional Status of Filipino Children and Other Population Groups, or the 2025 Updating Survey, by the Department of Science and Technology - Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI). The survey found that 54.8 percent (%) of infants aged 0 to 5.9 months were exclusively breastfed, an increase from 50.4% in the 2023 National Nutrition Survey (NNS).
