Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) and Howard Community College (HCC), Howard County, Maryland, USA, finalized plans for their Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) project titled “Sustainable Small Businesses: A Calculus Approach to Profit and Cost Optimization” during a virtual meeting held on May 20, 2026.

The project brings together the NORSU Main Campus 1 Mathematics Department, College of Teacher Education mathematics faculty, and Howard Community College to develop an international learning experience for students through the application of Business Calculus in real-world business situations.

The planning meeting was led by Dr. Michael Nyagol of Howard Community College and Dr. Craig N. Refugio, Director of the Office of the University International Relations, together with participating faculty members from both institutions. Discussions focused on finalizing project activities, timelines, learning outcomes, and student collaboration.

The COIL initiative supports SDG 4: Quality Education by providing students with international learning opportunities, SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth through the study of sustainable business practices, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals by strengthening academic cooperation between NORSU and Howard Community College.

Negros Oriental State University (NORSU), through the Office of the University International Relations, Graduate School, and College of Teacher Education, in partnership with the Philippine Association for Teachers and Educators – Negros Island Region, conducted the webinar titled “AI Synergy in Instruction, Research, and Extension” on May 18, 2026 via Zoom.

The webinar gathered teachers, students, and researchers to discuss the use of artificial intelligence in instruction, research, and extension work.

The activity featured Dr. Lei Wang from Auburn University at Montgomery, Alabama, USA, who discussed AI in Instructional Design and Evaluation. Dr. Ryan Escorial, Chairperson of the CSIT Department of the College of Arts and Sciences, discussed AI in Research Article Development.

Meanwhile, Dr. Chester Cofino from the CSIT Department discussed AI in Teaching and Learning, while Dr. Guilbert Nicanor A. Atillo, Director of the University Extension and Community Services, discussed AI in Research and Extension.

An inspirational message was delivered by University President Dr. Noel Marjon E. Yasi. Welcome remarks were given by Dr. Libertine C. de Guzman, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Chizanne S. Larena, Dean of the Graduate School, and Dr. Ryan O. Tayco, Campus Director for Main Campuses. The rationale of the activity was presented by Dr. Craig N. Refugio, Director of the Office of the University International Relations.

The webinar supported SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals through innovation, research, and academic collaboration.

Dr. Craig N. Refugio, Director of the Office of the University International Relations, successfully completed the 5-Week Training on COIL Project Development and Implementation on May 14, 2026.

The training, sponsored by COILConnect.org, Howard Community College (HCC), and the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC), focused on developing and implementing Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) projects among educators from different institutions.

The completion of the training strengthened NORSU’s efforts in promoting international academic collaboration and global learning opportunities. The activity also supported SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.

Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) ranked 191st in the World University Rankings for Innovation 2026, placing the university among the Top 500 most innovative universities in the world.

The ranking also showed NORSU’s performance in different areas. The university placed 6th in SDG and ESG-Based Response to Global Challenges, 15th in Visionary Leadership, and 22nd in Entrepreneurial Culture and Ecosystem. It also ranked 28th in Funding for Sustainability and 40th in Student Support and Engagement. Other areas included Empowerment-Based Management (56th), Financial Impact-Driven Technology Transfer (66th), Ethics and Integrity (71st), Infrastructure and Technology (71st), Inclusive Social Innovation (75th), Representative Research Project (82nd), Student Mobility and Openness (86th), Social Impact through Knowledge Transfer (89th), and Culture and Values (96th).

Moreover, Dr. Craig N. Refugio, Director of the Office of the University International Relations, said the recognition showed the shared effort of the university in improving innovation, research, and global partnerships. He added that NORSU continues to build connections and improve its programs for students and the community.

Week 3 of the 5-week Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Training was held on April 30, 2026, focusing on the values needed for a successful COIL project, such as commitment, dedication, motivation, hard work, time management, and going the extra mile.

The training, sponsored by COILConnect.org, Howard Community College (HCC), and the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC), brought together educators involved in international collaborative teaching. The session focused on practical ways to design and carry out COIL initiatives, while sharing examples and best practices for effective global classroom collaboration.

Dr. Craig N. Refugio, Director of the Office of the University International Relations of Negros Oriental State University (NORSU), joined the session as part of the university’s ongoing efforts to strengthen global partnerships and expand international learning opportunities.

The activity supported Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals by promoting better teaching practices and stronger international collaboration.

Following their participation in the International COIL Conference held at San Pedro College in Davao City last March 12–13, 2026, Dr. Ralph A. Cardeño and Dr. Joel Tuban Ubat held a virtual meeting on April 28, 2026 to discuss plans for a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) project.

During the meeting, they talked about how they could apply what they learned from the conference and how to start a COIL project in their courses.

This activity supported Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, as it encouraged better teaching practices and collaboration with international partners.

Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) Main Campus 1 Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEED) students taking Assessment of Learning 2 had a virtual meeting with their COIL project partners from Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM), USA on April 28, 2026.

The meeting was held to talk about their ongoing COIL project under the College of Teacher Education.

This activity showed NORSU’s support for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals by giving students a chance to learn with others from different countries and work together online.
