On April 6, 2026, community members of Barangay Nagsabaran actively participated in an Orientation on RA 11311 (Safe Spaces Act) cm First Aid Training, a significant step toward building a safer and more prepared community.

MSWDO Mildred Mangonor led the orientation, highlighting the importance of RA 11311 in protecting individuals from gender-based sexual harassment in public spaces, workplaces, educational institutions, and online platforms. The discussion encouraged awareness, respect, and collective responsibility in preventing all forms of harassment, violence, and abuse.

Moreover, findings from the community profiling conducted by IFSU Social Work interns from January to March revealed that many residents have not yet experienced first aid training. This is especially concerning as areas like Purok 2-Oriwong and Purok 3-Grotto are known to be accident-prone, making it even more important for the community to be equipped with life-saving skills.

To address this, the First Aid and Emergency Response Training was conducted by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), headed by SFO1 EPJ Binonwangan, together with FO1 Jerald Baccay, FO1 Justin John Gumpal, and FO1 Manny Galera. Participants gained essential life-saving skills and knowledge that can make a difference during emergencies.

This initiative reflects the communityโ€™s commitment to safety, awareness, and preparedness.

A safer community starts with informed and empowered individuals.

Empowering Leaders of BLGU Nagsabaran

On April 8, 2026, the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) of Barangay Nagsabaran actively participated in a seminar entitled โ€œEmpowering Local Leaders: A Capability-Building Seminar on the Roles and Functions of Elected and Appointed Officials and the Barangayโ€™s Role in the Implementation of Protective Laws for Women.โ€ The seminar aimed to strengthen the knowledge and competencies of barangay officials in fulfilling their duties, particularly in promoting and enforcing laws that protect women.

During the activity, MLGOO Jayson R. Fajardo discussed the roles and responsibilities of barangay officials, emphasizing their crucial function in governance, leadership, and community service. He highlighted the barangay as the primary planning and implementing unit of government policies, programs, and services at the community level. In accordance with RA 7160, barangay officials were reminded of their legislative, executive, and administrative responsibilities, including the enactment of ordinances, maintenance of peace and order, delivery of basic services, and promotion of the general welfare of their constituents. Emphasis was placed on their duty to exercise effective governance through transparency, accountability, and active community engagement. Similarly, appointed officials were oriented on their supportive roles in ensuring efficient barangay operations. Their functions in record-keeping, program coordination, dispute mediation support, and service delivery were underscored as essential in assisting elected officials in carrying out their mandates under the law.

Meanwhile, MSWDO Mildred Mangonor delivered an informative session on protective laws for women, highlighting the importance of safeguarding women's rights and ensuring proper implementation of these laws at the grassroots level. Officials were encouraged to strengthen mechanisms for prevention, reporting, and response to cases of abuse, ensuring that womenโ€™s rights are upheld at the grassroots level.

In addition, IFSU social work interns (Jefferson B.Bistol, Judy-Ann J. Cabbigat and Denny Rose L. Guina-at) presented the reports they gathered during their one-month fieldwork in the barangay. Their presentations provided valuable insights into the communityโ€™s current situation, including identified needs, challenges, and recommendations for improvement.

The seminar served as a meaningful platform for learning, collaboration, and strengthening the commitment of local leaders to uphold good governance and promote the welfare of women and the community as a whole.

Overall, the activity empowered both elected and appointed barangay officials to effectively perform their duties in alignment with RA 7160, fostering responsive, accountable, and gender-sensitive local governance.
