The City Government of Davao, through the City Health Officeโ€™s (CHO) Health Promotion Unit, was recognized for its equitable and sustainable delivery of healthcare programs across the city during the Department of Health (DOH)-Davao Regionโ€™s Healthy Setting Enablers Recognition.

The Healthy Setting Enablers Recognition is an official health promotion award spearheaded by the DOH, wherein local government units, public offices, and academic institutions are recognized for their successful implementation of wellness-driven policies.

Among the awards received by the CHO is the Healthy Settings Excellence Award, which recognizes the cityโ€™s outstanding overall implementation of health and wellness policies across the healthy settings framework.

The city also received the Healthy Community Award for demonstrating compliance with established healthy community standards, anchoring initiatives of the Universal Healthcare Act to create a supportive, health-promoting environment.

Dr. Margie R. Rubio, Head of the CHO, said that the Healthy Community Award was borne from localized multi-sectoral programs that meet Dabawenyos where they live, work, and study.

She also gave credit to the discipline exercised by every Dabawenyo for abiding by the policies and ordinances of the city that are anchored on ensuring the well-being of every resident of Davao.

This is a testament of the effects of the discipline of every Dabawenyo because we have good policies and ordinances in place, and these ordinances are effective through the participation of every resident of the city),โ€ Rubio emphasized.

She further highlighted the intersectoral collaboration across various government offices in the implementation of health programs including the effective and efficient enforcement of the cityโ€™s comprehensive anti-smoking ordinance and liquor ban through the joint effort of the Vices Regulations Unit (VRU) and the Davao City Police Office (DCPO). This also included the City Transport and Traffic Management Officeโ€™s strict implementation of traffic rules and regulations as well as the Dabawenyosโ€™ cooperation in following the allowable speed limits which significantly contributed to road safety and in decreasing cases of vehicular accidents.

Rubio also extended her gratitude to the City Environment and Natural Resources Office, especially to sanitary workers, who ensured that the city remains clean and safe for Dabawenyos.

โ€œThese awards belong to the entire Davao City. It is a direct result of strong executive leadership of our city local chief executive, Hon. Sebastian Duterte. This is also through the full support of our city legislative body in making policies to ensure the safety and health of Dabawenyos. The dedication of our CHO team, the active participation of our Dabawenyo families, school leaders, and workforce,โ€ she said.

In addition to these two awards are the Healthy Workplace Award, which recognizes the city governmentโ€™s implementation of the national policy framework on the promotion of a healthy workplace that prioritizes workersโ€™ health, safety, psychosocial environment and well-being.

Academic institutions, particularly public schools, across the city also received the Healthy Learning Institution Awards under the Oplan Kalusugan sa DepEd. This is for integrating health literacy, physical activity, proper nutrition, and prevention of smoking and alcohol consumption into school curricula and environments.

โ€œKani siya nga programa sa DepEd, makanunayon ni siya namo nga ginabuhat because we integrate age-appropriate health literacy, school-based immunization, proper nutrition, dental health, anti-smoking and substance abuse campaigns in our schools, ensuring every young learner thrives in a classroom setting (With this DepEd program, we make sure that we consistently integrate age-appropriate health literacy, school-based immunization, proper nutrition, dental health, anti-smoking substance abuse campaigns in our schools, ensuring every young learner thrives in a school setting),โ€ Rubio said.

โ€œThese awards validate that Davao City is leading the way as an exemplar universal healthcare integration site. They show that our local government unit is not just treating illnesses but actively creating an environment that prevents disease and protects health. This directly aligns with our vision of a sustainable, resilient Davao City. When our workers are safe in their offices, our children are protected in their classrooms, our families are supported in clean safe barangays, we build a healthier, more productive city, capable of sustaining long term economic growth and community well-being,โ€ she added.

The City Government of Davao continues to expand and strengthen Central 911โ€™s free, 24/7 emergency response services with the construction of a new satellite station in Paquibato District. The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) officially broke ground for the Central 911 Satellite Station in Barangay Malabog on September 15, 2026.

The new satellite station is one of the City Governmentโ€™s priority projects aimed at bringing emergency medical and rescue services closer to Dabawenyos living in remote and geographically isolated communities in the city.

For 24 years now, Davao City Central 911 has been providing Dabawenyos with free and reliable emergency response services.

The Malabog station is expected to be completed by April 2027.

Currently, the CDRRMO operates four Central 911 satellite stations across the city, located in Barangays Baganihan, Toril, Calinan, and Indangan.

The Philippine Science High Schoolโ€“Davao Region Campus (PSHS-DRC) achieved a high rating in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2025 National School Ranking, which included 208 schools across the country, particularly in the areas of Mathematics, Science, and Reading.

PISA, organized by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), is an international evaluation that assesses 15-year-old students' reasoning, problem-solving, analysis, interpretation and the ability to evaluate evidence and use learning in practical contexts.

Councilor Antoinette G. Principe, during her privilege speech on Tuesday, conveyed her appreciation for the campus milestone, noting that this achievement reflects stories of perseverance and honoring school leaders who continuously believed in the capability of their learners.

โ€œBased on the results presented to us, our Philippine Science High School-Davao Region Campus emerged as the highest-performing participating school in the country, with exceptionally strong performance across Reading, Mathematics and Science. And for us here in Davao City, that is something we can be really proud of,โ€ she said.

โ€œIt is a source of pride not only for Philippine Science High School. It is a source of pride of Davao City, for Southern Mindanao, for Mindanao and for the entire Philippines,โ€ she added.

During the PISA 2025 National Results Launching held at the Caloocan City Science High School, Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara said that the Philippinesโ€™ participation in PISA 2025 marked its strongest performance since joining in 2018, outranking other participating countries.

โ€œDulong-dulo tayo nung 2018, actuallyโ€ฆ Medyo dito sa 2025 medyo umarangkada na po ang Pilipinas,โ€ he said.

Based on the latest PISA results, the Philippines achieved a mean score of 373 in science, 371 in mathematics, and 367 in reading, representing increases of 17, 16, and 20 points, respectively, from the countryโ€™s 2022 PISA results.

Among the schools in the city that also participated in PISA 2025 were Doรฑa Carmen Denia National High School, Talomo National High School, Maa National High School and the Victor Bernal Integrated School.

Jonald P. Fenecios, Campus Director of PSHS-DRC, also acknowledged the support of the City Government of Davao in preparing for PISA 2025, which included PISA Mastery sessions, transportation for identified learners, provision of meals during the sessions, generator sets to ensure uninterrupted power during testing, and multivitamins to help learners stay healthy and focused.

โ€œIn terms of preparations, the local government unit, specifically Davao City, helps us in our preparations like financially. The LGU also provided snacks for the students and materials as well as DepEd in the preparations,โ€ he said.

Fenecios also express his gratitude to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), DepEd, regional and division offices, school heads, teachers and all personnel who worked behind the scene to make the achievement possible.

โ€œIt also means that the Philippine Science High School system, we are doing something right. Because, we cannot deny that there is really a substantial performance of our takers. So, we are happy with this result and with this result, it will make us move forward. Hopefully, the next time we join, we will be able to go beyond the average of the OECD. So, that is our aim,โ€ he added.

Meanwhile, Davao City consistently prioritized education as a cornerstone of its development agenda by allocating substantial resources to strengthen education through infrastructure.

The cityโ€™s Special Education Fund (SEF) also supported classroom construction, learning tools, and various initiatives that enhance the quality of instruction and student outcomes.

The City Government of Davao continues to reinforce education, ensuring that achievements like this inspire future generations of Dabawenyo learners to aim higher and excel further. CIO

Davao City will host the full-distance IRONMAN Philippines Davao in 2027, with Sunrise Events citing its infrastructure developments, safety and security, and strong support from the city government as key factors in its selection. The event is expected to attract local, national, and international triathletes.

โ€œWe want to explore other parts of the Philippines because weโ€™re also doing this for sports tourism in the country โ€ฆ Now, we have seen that Davao has progressed by leaps and bounds in all facets,โ€ Princess Galaura, President of Sunrise Events, said during the IRONMAN media launch.

โ€œLahat ng required infrastructure and volume capacity to support the event nandito na, thereโ€™s an airport na kasya yung bikes natin. As Iโ€™ve said, thereโ€™s so many hotelsโ€”different kinds, different optionsโ€”maraming klaseng athletes can already afford to come here. Hospitals meron na, restaurants meron na (Davao City already have all the required infrastructure and volume capacity to support the event. Thereโ€™s an international airport that can accommodate our bikes. There are so many options for accommodations that different athletes can choose from. There are also hospitals and restaurants),โ€ she added.

Galaura also highlighted Davao Cityโ€™s safety, security, and cleanliness.

โ€œDavao really doesnโ€™t have any trash, doesnโ€™t have double parking. So talagaโ€™ng malinis and safe and secure, and we want to tell the world that there are other parts of the Philippines that they can go to na hindi lang Metro Manila, hindi lang Cebu (So itโ€™s really clean, safe and secure, and we want to let the world know that there are other places in the Philippines that they can go toโ€”not just Metro Manila and Cebu),โ€ she said.

She further emphasized the uniqueness of Mindanaoan culture, cuisine, people, and tourist spots that athletes may experience when they visit the region.
โ€œEven if you went to Cebu, even if you went to Subic, going to Mindanao is totally different in terms of everything: cuisine, culture, people, tourist spots. And of course, the triathlon base here is strong,โ€ Galaura emphasized.

Preparations for the full-distance IRONMAN Philippines Davao and IRONMAN 70.3 is underway. Registration for the full distance and the 70.3 is also ongoing.
