As we commemorate this year's National Heroes Day, we remember that the legacy of our heroes live on in our collective responsibility to build a nation where every Filipino has the opportunity to live with dignity, reach their full potential, and contribute meaningfully to society.

For the Commission on Population and Development, nation-building begins with empowered individuals and families, healthy and productive communities, and development policies that respond to the changing needs and realities of our population.

May the courage, sacrifice, and love of country shown by our heroes inspire us to work together toward a more inclusive, resilient, and people-centered Region XI.

IN THE NEWS | Protecting our youngest adolescents requires urgent, coordinated action

Pregnancies among girls aged 10โ€“14 in the Davao Region increased from 240 cases in 2022 to 284 in 2024, underscoring the need to treat very early adolescent pregnancy not only as a reproductive health concern, but also as a child protection and social protection issue.

During the recently-held Healthy Davao Media Forum, CPD Region XI Director Jeff Y. Fuentes emphasized that even a single pregnancy involving a girl aged 10โ€“14 should already be a cause for concern.

Regional data further show that, among cases where the fatherโ€™s age was recorded, the large majority involved adult fathersโ€”reinforcing the need for proper case assessment, protection, referral, and coordinated action among concerned agencies and LGUs.

CPD Region XI continues to call for data-driven and targeted interventions, particularly in areas with high adolescent pregnancy burden and rates, alongside stronger adolescent-friendly services, school and community-based Teen Centers, family engagement, and child-protection mechanisms.

Preventing adolescent pregnancy is not the responsibility of girls alone. It requires families, communities, schools, health providers, social welfare offices, LGUs, and government agencies to work together to ensure that every young person is informed, supported, protected, and given the opportunity to pursue a healthy and productive future.
