Despite significant nutrition challenges in their community, Barangay Najandig of Zamboanguita, Negros Oriental persists in their nutrition program efforts as they recognize the importance of good nutrition for their community to progress. As an identified geographically isolated and disadvantaged area, Najandig is no stranger to limited access to nutritious food and health care due to poor road conditions, limited water access during dry months, and low income levels.

To prioritize nutrition in the barangay means that Barangay Najandig does not only invest in the conduct of nutrition awareness activities but also fully engages the community in household and community-level food production, and endeavors to bring health services closer to the people. By adjusting to the communityโ€™s needs, the barangay was able to make noticeable reductions in stunting rates and an overall improvement in community health.

The active involvement and commitment of Najandigโ€™s Barangay Nutrition Committee are critical in resource mobilization and program management. With the committeeโ€™s regular monitoring, the households are not only compelled to have their own backyard gardens, but to also develop better health-seeking behaviors. The combination of local food production, education, and targeted feeding programs has proven effective and sustainable.

What sets Najandigโ€™s interventions apart is its holistic approach, combining local food production, education, and targeted feeding programs to create sustainable and effective solutions. Najandig serves as a role model for other communities. Looking forward, it plans to enhance agricultural practices to improve local farming techniques, increase access to healthcare facilities and services, and continue nutrition education campaigns to further raise awareness. // NO III Nasudi G.
