Where did the left handshake come from?

The left-handed Scout handshake is a formal greeting used by Scouts of both genders worldwide. The handshake is made with the hand nearest to the heart and is offered as a token of friendship.

In January 1896, during the military campaign in Kumasi, Ghana, Baden-Powell met an Ashanti chief who offered his left hand in greeting. When Baden-Powell offered his right hand, the chief explained that the bravest shake with the left because it requires dropping one's protective shield.

Then-Colonel Baden-Powell saluted the Ashanti chiefs with his right hand, but they offered their left hands and said, "In our land only the bravest of the brave shake hands with the left hand, because to do so we must drop our shields and our protection." The Ashantis knew of Baden-Powell's bravery because they had fought against him and with him, and they were proud to offer the left hand of bravery.

Lord Robert Baden-Powell integrated the left-handed handshake into the Scouting movement when he officially founded Scouting in 1907, drawing inspiration from the pivotal encounter with the Ashanti Chief.

On July 31, 2026, the first general assembly was successfully accomplished by the Boy Scouts of the Philippines - Outfit 101. New and outgoing scouts were both welcomed and welcomed back for the first term of the school year.

The scouts gathered in the School's Covered Court and were led to start by Sct. Rylle James Arbollente and Sct. Gian Mavhin Malanom with our Outfit Advisor, SL. Mylene Hernandez. Scouting was introduced to the new scouts; this included the start of scouting, the uniform, the logos and emblems, and, most importantly, the Scout Oath and Law as the sign of commitment.

This assembly is the beginning of many activities yet to come. Wait and see as we grow and build a stronger scouting movement. We are scouts with commitment, scouts with dedication, and scouts full of hope.

What is scouting and who started it?

The Scouting story is one of growth, service, and adventure that has inspired youth for more than a century. It began in 1907, when an experimental camp, open to 20 lads, was held by Robert Baden-Powell on Brownsea Island, and then in 1908 published Scouting for Boys, which spread throughout the world and inspired a Movement that quickly spread across borders.

Robert Baden-Powell founded the Scouting Movement after realizing the importance of developing young people into responsible, capable, and service-oriented citizens. In 1907, he held an experimental camp on Brownsea Island to test his ideas on outdoor learning, leadership, and teamwork. Its success led him to publish Scouting for Boys in 1908, inspiring the rapid growth of Scouting around the world.

By 1920, Scouts from all nations had gathered at the first World Scout Jamboree, and even in the bleakest moments of poverty and war, Scouting had evolved, such that the youth were serving in society, leading patrols, and keeping the spirit alive even in secrecy, where it had been banned. Over the years, Scouting had grown through the introduction of the Cubs, then the Rovers, and patrols for girls, such that it had become more inclusive and relevant in the face of challenges in society.

Scouting today unites over 60 million members in more than 200 countries, giving an opportunity for the youth to be equipped, conserve the world, and inspire peace. With initiatives such as Messengers of Peace and Scouts for SDGs, and over a century of heritage behind it, Scouting continues to enable generations of creating a better and more sustainable future.

Last July 17, 2026, the Boy Scouts of the Philippines - Outfit 101 along with the Senior Girl Scouts conducted their Room-to-Room Campaign in the Grade 7 students. These students are encouraged to join the scouting movement, which aims to nurture the youth in character building with morals and values, and helps them acquire life skills.

Scouting is a lifelong journey that does not end at the institution; it lives on in the person one has grown to be. Not everything must be learned in the classroom; some lessons can be learned through experience and interaction with our fellow men.

May many more students find joy in scouting, may they keep the lessons learned throughout their lives, and may the memories of scouting not end.
