On May 29, 2026, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) - Zamboanga del Norte and DepEd Dapitan City officially signed a Memorandum of Agreement at the SDO Conference Hall to strengthen disaster risk reduction in local schools. The agreement was forged between BFP Acting Fire Marshall PSUPT Richard C. Timosa, FSC, and DepEd Schools Division Superintendent Jay S. Montealto, CESO V, who was represented by SGOD Chief Sherlito E. Sagapsapan. To launch the long-term partnership, the BFP distributed life-saving fire extinguishers and essential school supplies to its priority recipient, Selinog Integrated School, aiming to embed fire safety and emergency readiness into the educational system.
This initiative is crucial for Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDA) like Selinog Island, which is far from mainland urban centers and lacks rapid access to standard emergency services. Remote schools are often exposed to unique environmental hazards, making them highly vulnerable to disasters. By equipping local learners and educators with hands-on safety tools, material support, and formal training, this partnership bridges a critical resource gap and shifts the community from passive vulnerability to active, well-prepared resilience.
