This June, the BARMM Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy (MENRE) joins the nation in celebrating the Philippine Environment Month (PEM) with the theme โ€œAksyon Klima: Bayanihang Mapagkalinga Sa Kapaligiran.โ€

This yearโ€™s PEM celebration calls to move past beyond awareness. It calls for actual action to strengthen climate resilience.

Across the country, communities are working together to restore forests, conserve biodiversity, and reduce waste. These efforts demonstrate that climate action is built through collective action and shared responsibility.

As we observe , the MENRE urges the Bangsamoro community to strengthen the spirit of Bayanihan and environmental stewardship. Through small but sustainable practices, like responsible resource use, saying โ€œnoโ€ to single-use plastics, helping share awareness, and joining tree-planting and clean-up initiatives, we can help contribute to a greener and climate-resilient future.

Join us as we transform our concern into action. Because the most powerful response to a changing climate is a nation united in caring for its environment.

Have you ever imagined a bird flying across the ocean for more than 13,000 kilometers without stopping even once?

The Bar-tailed Godwit, scientifically known as ๐˜“๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ข ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ฑ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ข, accomplished that, making it one of the most extraordinary migratory birds in the world. The Bar-tailed Godwit is a migratory bird that can be seen in BARMM. It travels along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, moving between Arctic breeding grounds and coastal wetlands across Asia and Australasia, including the Philippines. In 2022, a young Bar-tailed Godwit flew from Alaska to Tasmania in just 11 days, completing the longest nonstop flight ever recorded for a bird.

This bird is a gangly wader with a long bicolored bill. The breeding plumage of a male Bar-tailed Godwit is dark brick-red below, while the female breeding plumage is pale orange. In non-breeding plumage, its appearance is overall gray-brown with a white belly. During flight, the Bar-tailed Godwitโ€™s upper wings appear plain with a faint whitish wing stripe, a white rump, and a finely barred tail.

The species is commonly found in coastal mudflats, estuaries, mangroves, lagoons, and sheltered bays.

In BARMM, this bird was recorded in Brgy. Laitan, South Ubian Municipality, Tawi-Tawi. Thirteen (13) individual Bar-tailed Godwit birds were recorded by the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy (MENRE) during its Waterbirds and Wetland Monitoring last November 2025.

Despite its extraordinary endurance, the Bar-tailed Godwit is now classified as Near Threatened on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species in 2025 due to habitat loss, coastal reclamation, pollution, disturbance, hunting, and climate change. Scientists estimate that the global population has declined by 15โ€“29% over the past three generations.

Let us help protect our wetlands and the migratory birds that depend on them.

MENRE-BARMM, NAMRIA PARTNER TO ROLL OUT UPDATED REGIONAL LAND COVER MAPS FOR ENHANCED ENVIRONMENTAL GOVERNANCE

COTABATO CITY โ€” In a major step toward data-driven environmental planning, the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA), in close coordination with the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energyโ€™s Forest Management Services (MENRE-FMS), has successfully concluded a series of regional stakeholder presentations to roll out its updated Land Cover Maps. Covering key provinces within the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and Region IX, this initiative is a vital component of NAMRIAโ€™s ongoing nationwide Land Cover Mapping Project.

The presentations formally introduced preliminary land cover data covering the provinces of Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi. The consultations also served as a collaborative platform for gathering localized insights, technical validation, and stakeholder feedback prior to the finalization of the geospatial data.

Following a communication from NAMRIA Administrator Peter N. Tiangco to MENRE Minister Akmad A. Brahim, both agencies emphasized inclusive and participatory engagement throughout the validation process.

Technical specialists from the FMS Land Evaluation and Mapping Section (LEMS), Land Management Services (LMS), and Provincial Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy Offices (PENREOs) specializing in Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping, alongside representatives from select Local Government Units (LGUs), actively engaged in validating the preliminary maps via interactive online platforms.

Engr. Raul T. Magabo, Supervising Remote Sensing Technologist and head of the NAMRIA technical team, noted that the updated maps leverage state-of-the-art satellite imagery featuring a 10-meter resolution. Engr. Magabo highlighted a significant operational milestone: while updating land cover data traditionally required a five-year cycle, NAMRIA has successfully optimized its workflows to deliver updates on an agile two-year cycle. This rapid turnaround ensures that local government units and regional planners have access to highly relevant, near-real-time data.

The stakeholder presentation workshops were conducted in three separate venues to ensure wider regional participation and coverage. On 19 May 2026, the presentations were held at the MENRE Conference Hall in Cotabato City, covering the provinces of Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Sur, and Maguindanao del Norte. On 21 May 2026, another presentation was conducted at the Grand Astoria Hotel for the island provinces of Basilan and Sulu in Region IX, while a separate session was simultaneously held at the MENRE Conference Room in Tawi-Tawi, exclusively dedicated to the province of Tawi-Tawi.

Following these presentations, Provincial and Community Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy Offices (P/CENREOs), and partner LGUs are allocated a two-week window to complete their localized online verifications.

Ultimately, this joint undertaking equips the Bangsamoro region with the precise geospatial intelligence necessary to advance accurate environmental management, strategic resource allocation, and sustainable regional development planning.

Sea turtles remain among the most iconic marine species found within the coastal and island ecosystems of the Bangsamoro region. As vital parts of marine biodiversity, their presence reflects the health of our seas and the importance of protecting the habitats that sustain marine life and coastal communities.

This World Turtle Day, the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy (MENRE) joins the global observance in reaffirming its commitment to marine conservation and biodiversity protection in BARMM. Through continued collaboration with communities, local governments, and partner institutions, efforts to protect marine ecosystems and critical habitats continue to move forward across the region.

Their survival is closely tied to the future of our oceans. As environmental challenges continue to affect marine ecosystems, MENRE calls for stronger collective action in protecting sea turtles and preserving the rich natural heritage of the Bangsamoro for future generations.

The Bangsamoro region is considered a globally significant biodiversity hotspot. With its rich marine life, expansive forests, and wetlands, it continues to sustain communities and shelter diverse flora and fauna species.

However, these ecosystems continue to face pressure from pollution, land conversion, overexploitation, and climate change.

This year's International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB), the focus centered on the theme, "Acting locally for global impact,โ€ highlighting that major changes begin on a small, local scale; recognizing that local actions and community-led efforts remain essential in addressing biodiversity loss.

Protecting our biological diversity helps in biodiversity conservation and supports food security, livelihoods, and climate resilience in the region.

As we observe the International Day for Biological Diversity, the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy (MENRE) calls on every Bangsamoro to continue protecting our natural resources through sustainable practices, environmental stewardship, and active participation in conservation efforts. Because when communities act locally, the impact reaches globally.
