Guarding Young Lives: 549EBn Strengthens Child Protection Awareness

The 549th Engineer Battalion, 54th Engineer Brigade, Philippine Army, strengthened its commitment to child protection through the conduct of Lecture on Children’s Rights and Protection on September 03, 2026 at Headquarters 549EBn, Camp Siongco, Awang, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte.

The activity was spearheaded by the Civil-Military Operations (CMO) Section and attended by the Officer and Enlisted Personnel of the unit. The lecture was conducted in line with the guidance of the Higher Headquarters and the Secretary of National Defense, particularly on the strict prohibition against allowing children or minors to hold, carry, pose with, or otherwise handle fi****ms, weapons, am******on, military equipment, or objects resembling weapons.

Serving as resource person was Ms. Princess Ameerah C. Adzar, RSW, a focal person from the Child in Need of Special Protection/Child Labor Program of the City Social Welfare and Development Office, who provided valuable insights on children’s fundamental rights and the measures necessary to ensure their safety and protection.

Prior to the lecture, Ms. Adzar paid a courtesy call to LTC NOEL C SALVAJAN CE (GSC) PA, Commanding Officer of the 549th Engineer Battalion. The courtesy call provided an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of strengthening coordination and cooperation between the Philippine Army and the local social welfare sector in promoting children's rights, welfare, and protection.

During the lecture, Ms. Adzar discussed the different forms of child abuse and exploitation and emphasized the responsibility of adults, particularly personnel in uniform, to safeguard children from situations that may place them at risk. The discussion also highlighted the importance of responsible conduct and heightened awareness when participating in activities involving children, students, and youth.

The activity served as a timely reminder to all personnel that responsible handling and proper safeguarding of fi****ms, weapons, am******on, and military equipment are essential, particularly in environments where children and young people are present. It further reinforced the need to avoid actions that may create an impression of unauthorized access to weapons or normalize their presence in settings involving minors.
