FARMERS SEMINAR ON MANAGEMENT PRACTICES FOR CORN, SOYBEAN, CASSAVA, VEGETABLES AND RICE COMMODITIES | MUNICIPALITY OF DINAGAT, PROVINCE OF DINAGAT ISLAND | NOVEMBER 19-21, 2024
A seminar series on management practices of various agricultural commodities has recently concluded, aims to empower the farmers thereby empowering the future. This capacity building for farmers is part of the R&D initiatives under the PARTNERS Project funded by the DA-Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR) titled Community-based Soil Health Management and Integrated Farming Systems Towards Entrepreneurship and Sustainability in Selected Municipalities of Dinagat Islands and Agusan del Sur, particularly on Study 1: Community-based Soil Health Management Technologies to Enhance Crop Productivity and Income in Dinagat, Province of Dinagat Islands.
This activity was successfully conducted last November 19-21, 2024 in collaboration with the Provincial and Municipal Local Government Unit through the Provincial and Municipal Agriculture Office along with the active partners from the Agricultural Program Coordinating Office (APCO) โ PDI. Present during the 3-day activity were Robelyn P. Parreรฑas, Municipal Agriculturist; Allen M. Sayon, Corn/Cassava/Soybean Municipal Coordinator; Meravilla U. Canico, HVCDP Municipal Coordinator; Rhana Mae Acabal, and Perla Narbuada, Technical Staff, APCO-PDI. Resource speakers were composed of technical experts from the Provincial and Municipal Agriculture Office, along with the technical experts from the DA-RFO13. Mr. Milky O. Ebueza, Agriculturist II, discussed the cultural and management practices on vegetable production; Ms. Allen M. Sayon, Agricultural Technologist discussed the management practices on corn, soybean, and cassava production; Ms. Florites J. Rosales, Supervising Agriculturist discussed the cultural and management practices on rice production, concept on balance fertilization and alternate wetting & drying (AWD); and Mr. Charles A. Castro, Science Research Specialist II discussed the insect pests and diseases. Five (5) Farmers each from Barangay New Mabuhay, Justiniana Edera, Bagumbayan, Wadas, and Magsaysay while 20 Farmers from Barangay Cayetano participated on the abovementioned seminar.
This seminar on modern farming practices is all about sharing knowledge, innovative techniques, and sustainable solutions as we are cultivating a better tomorrow for agriculture in the region. It advocates โhealthy soil, healthy cropsโ through balance fertilization- a key to boosting crop growth and protecting the environment. Moreover, this study promotes as well the organic fertilization, a technology working with the poor quality of soil in nourishing the plants naturally. From compost to manure, these eco-friendly options promote healthier soil and a healthier planet. Letโs grow sustainably, through the balance fertilization strategy and/or the organic way.
Ultimately, this project is challenged to address insufficient supply thereby securing food "from the fields to your plateโ, our dear farmers are growing the best of nature whether itโs rice, corn, vegetables, cassava, or soybeans, and these crops are the heart of sustainable farming and healthy living. Let's nourish the earth with the right nutrients, at the right time, and in the right amounts.
