Almost eleven years ago, I handled a pro bono case that has stayed with me to this day. My client was a poor farmer whose farm tools had been unlawfully taken from him without a search warrant, on the allegation that the items were in violation of a law concerning the concealment of deadly weapons. We fought the case, and in the end, he was acquitted. But what I remember most was not the acquittal itself. I remember the day my client came to me with a simple offering: a few cabbages, carrots, potatoes, and some coins he had taken from his old bamboo coin bank. It certainly was not much in monetary value. But I happily accepted them because I knew they were given sincerely, from the heart. For him, those vegetables and those coins represented gratitude. For me, they became one of the most meaningful payments I have ever received as a lawyer.

That night, after the promulgation of judgment, and after everything had settled, I found myself crying. I realized that I was already a practicing lawyer, and somewhere in a small corner of the country, there was a person who had placed his trust in me and believed that I could stand up for him. That moment gave me a deeper sense of fulfillment than any professional recognition could have given me. I prayed to the Good Lord for wisdom to know what is right, strength to stand for it, and courage to continue serving those who are less privileged in life and victims of injustices. Almost eleven years later, I still carry that prayer with me. It reminds me that the practice of law is not only about cases, pleadings, victories, or fees. Sometimes, the greatest reward is knowing that you became someone the poor and the underprivileged could depend on when they had nowhere else to turn.

Yes, that night too, I just gifted myself with milk tea because I was sure my wife was hotter than my coffee. 😁

There are moments in a lawyer’s life when a case becomes more than just pleadings, hearings, and arguments. I once stood before the court for a framed-up client, who had very little power, resources, or voice, but who firmly believed that justice was still possible. The odds seemed heavy, but we continued to fight, one hearing at a time, presenting the truth and trusting the process. In the end, the court ruled in our favor. It was more than a legal victory for me. It was a moment when a person who felt powerless finally saw that the law could still stand beside him.

That experience reminded me why I chose this profession. The practice of law is not merely about winning cases. It is about giving a voice to those who struggle to be heard, standing firm when the powerful seem overwhelming, and using the law to protect the dignity of every person. A lawyer's greatest triumph is not measured by the applause that follows a favorable judgment, but by the quiet relief in a client's eyes when he finally knows that someone stood up and fought for him. May we never forget that behind every case is a human being who deserves to be heard, respected, and treated with justice.

They say the 2026 Bar Examinations are brutally difficult. Perhaps that is the point. The Roll of Attorneys is not a consolation prize for those who simply survived law school. Behind the title of being an attorney is the freedom of an accused, the property of a family, the reputation of a person, and sometimes the fate of someone who has nowhere else to turn. The law deserves practitioners who are not only able to pass an examination, but are truly prepared to carry that burden.

To the 2026 Bar candidates especially to my students, remember that every sleepless night, every sacrifice, every moment of doubt, and every time you chose to keep going has brought you closer to this moment. A difficult Bar does not diminish your journey. If anything, it makes the prize more meaningful. And when your name finally finds its place on the Roll of Attorneys, may you look back and know that you did not merely pass through the gate. You earned the right to walk through it.

Now that you have finished the exams, I encourage you to trust in the value of prayers. God is listening. πŸ™

The liberty of an accused is a fundamental right that lies at the heart of our criminal justice system. An accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt, and this presumption carries with it the protection of personal liberty against arbitrary restraint. While the State has the authority to prosecute and punish those who violate the law, that power must always be exercised within the bounds of due process and respect for constitutional rights. The deprivation of liberty is never something to be taken lightly, for behind every criminal case is a person whose freedom, dignity, and future are at stake. Justice, therefore, demands not only that the guilty be punished, but also that the innocent be protected from unjust imprisonment.
