MANDAYA AND MANOBO CELEBRATE SHARING AND SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH DINANGWAGAY FESTIVAL
The Municipality of Boston in the Province of Davao Oriental is a home to the two ethnolinguistic groups namely: the Mandaya and Manobo, who are not only unified by blood but with sharing and sustaining their customs and tradition and the advancement of their bountiful ancestral domain. One of their ways of sharing is through community gathering and festivity that is evident during Dinangwagay Festival.
The Dinangwagay is an annual festive occasion of the Mandaya and Manobo in celebration of their ornate and complex cultural heritage within their ancestral domain. Boston is largely an ancestral domain which was titled and was awarded to the IPs in 2017. Through Dinangwagay, the Indigenous Cultural Communities/Indigenous Peoples (ICCs/IPs) are gathering to celebrate oneness and unity and sharing the abundance of their lands. The name “Dinangwagay” interprets “the act of giving and sharing equally” which impeccably showcase the spirit of generosity. It is held every harvest season on the month of April and when the bounty of their lands is eminent. Consequently, the culture of sharing is deeply embedded in the two ICCs/IPs.
As it is magnificently celebrated annually, various activities are organized to attain the impact that the IP leaders and elders are trying to instill to their IP and non-IP brethren, be it children, youth, adult, and fellow leaders and elders. This year’s celebration specifically focused on the importance of reinforcing their deep connection with nature. The Dinangwagay is officially opened by a panawagtawag, an opening ritual dedicated to Magbabaya for the consecration of the festivity, in general. Each participating barangay selects their contenders to compete for singing contest, cultural dance presentation, B’ya Un to Tribu, and cooking of IP delicacies. These are designed to focus on the promotion of their strong relationship to the natural environment and highlight various ways in which the IPs live sustainably with their surroundings.
The Dinangwagay festival was graced by Hon. Rowell F. Rosit, the Municipal Mayor and other officials and personalities from the municipality. The National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) represented by the Provincial Officer, Mr. Emmanuel A. Cacal, MPA also expressing that the office joins this timely and culturally relevant gathering of the IPs. Since 2017, Dinangwagay is not just a momentous celebration of the culture of Manobo and Mandaya, but it is also an opportunity that deepens the relationship of the locals to the nature with the support from government offices and other stakeholders. Indeed, it creates an avenue where commitment to preserving culture and the ancestral domain is a focus to pave the way of the present and future generations and shaping community’s resilience to face adversities and challenges of time.
