The flooding we are experiencing today in Cantilan is once again a clear reminder that our municipality urgently needs a comprehensive and long-term flood control plan.
The current drainage system in many areas is simply not designed to handle the volume of rain that we experience today. What may have worked decades ago is no longer enough for the stronger and more frequent rainfall we now face. As a result, water quickly accumulates on roads and in communities, affecting homes, businesses, and the safety of our people.
But drainage capacity is only part of the problem. Flooding in Cantilan may also be caused by several factors such as:
1. Siltation and narrowing of rivers and waterways which reduce the natural flow of water.
2. Clogged drainage canals due to garbage and debris.
3. Low-lying areas that naturally collect water during heavy rains.
4. Rapid development without adequate stormwater planning.
5. Loss of vegetation upstream which increases runoff during heavy rainfall.
6. Changing weather patterns and stronger storms.
These are issues that require serious planning, engineering solutions, and long-term investment, not just temporary responses during floods.
Cantilan deserves a modern drainage and flood management system that includes improved canals, regular desilting of rivers, proper waste management, flood mitigation infrastructure, and stronger environmental protection.
Flooding should not be something we simply accept every time it rains heavily. It is time to plan not only for today, but for the future of Cantilan.
Let this situation be a call for collective action, responsible planning, and sustainable solutions for the safety and resilience of our community.
