The Department of Education (DepEd) will limit extracurricular activities to designated end-of-term periods under its new three-term academic calendar to ensure that regular classroom instruction remains uninterrupted.

John Chavez, chief education supervisor of the Curriculum Implementation Division (CID) of the DepEd Schools Division of Marinduque, said the policy aims to protect instructional time and allow teachers to focus on delivering lessons without disruptions from non-academic activities.

โ€œSa end of term lang puwede mag extra-curricular activities upang di makuhaan ng oras ang mga regular na pagtuturo o ang instructional block,โ€ Chavez said during the Division Media Conference 2026 held on June 3 at the Schools Division Office Conference Hall in Barangay Malusak, Boac.

The policy forms part of the implementation of the new three-term school calendar under DepEd Order No. 009, series of 2026, which replaces the traditional four-quarter system in basic education.

DepEd said the revised academic calendar is designed to provide longer uninterrupted learning periods, reduce administrative demands on teachers, and support more effective academic recovery initiatives for learners.

Under the new structure, the school year will consist of 201 class days divided into three academic terms. Each term includes specific learning blocks intended to improve instructional pacing and minimize disruptions to classroom teaching.

The Opening Block, which covers the first week of Term 1, is dedicated to student profiling, orientation activities, and diagnostic assessments.

During this period, schools administer the Beginning-of-School-Year (BOSY) assessment to determine the learning levels of students and identify those who may require additional academic support.

Students identified through the assessment will be enrolled in the Academic Recovery and Accessible Learning (ARAL) program, where they will receive remedial instruction and tutoring to address learning gaps.

Their progress will be monitored throughout the school year and evaluated during the end-of-term blocks.

The Instructional Block, lasting between 54 and 61 days, comprises the largest portion of each term and is reserved exclusively for uninterrupted classroom instruction to help students master the core curriculum.

Meanwhile, the Enrichment or End-of-Term Block serves as a period for remediation activities, completion of grades, wellness programs, teacher professional development, and approved extracurricular activities.

The ARAL Program was institutionalized through Republic Act No. 12028, signed into law by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., providing a free national learning intervention program for students from Kindergarten to Grade 10. | via Kurt Lansangan

The familiar sound of footsteps echoed through school corridors once again as thousands of learners returned to classrooms across the Schools Division of Calapan City for the opening of School Year 2026-2027.

Within classrooms filled with anticipation and promise, students were welcomed by teachers ready to guide, inspire and nurture learning as a new academic year formally commenced.

The reopening of schools coincides with the implementation of the three-term calendar structure in basic education, with the first week designated as the โ€œOpening Blockโ€ โ€” a period dedicated to developmentally appropriate activities that help learners transition smoothly into the school environment.

Schools Division Superintendent Susana M. Bautista said the Opening Block is designed to foster a sense of belonging, strengthen relationships among learners and teachers, and create a positive atmosphere that supports meaningful learning throughout the year.

Rather than immediately focusing on academic requirements, the initial days of classes emphasize classroom routines, social interaction, well-being, and activities that encourage learners to reconnect with their peers and educators.

Across schools in the division, classrooms came alive with introductions, collaborative activities, and conversations that set the foundation for a productive and engaging school year.

For many learners, the first day marked more than a return to school. It signaled the beginning of new opportunities to acquire knowledge, develop skills, build friendships, and pursue aspirations.

Teachers, meanwhile, welcomed students with renewed commitment, recognizing their role in shaping not only academic success but also the character and future of every learner entrusted to their care.

As the new school year unfolds, education stakeholders expressed optimism that the months ahead will be filled with meaningful experiences, personal growth, and discoveries that will help learners reach their fullest potential.

With classrooms once again bustling with energy and enthusiasm, schools across Calapan City opened their doors to another year of learning, growth, and new beginnings. | via Ace Sapit
