COMELEC: NO EXTENSION OF REGISTRATION FOR BARANGAY AND SK POLLS
The Commission on Elections will not extend the July 30 deadline of the voter’s registration period for the 2016 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.
Chairman Andres Bautista said that an extension will impact their preparations for the Project of Precincts (POPs) which contain data on the number of established precincts, respective number of registered voters, and their voting centers. He advised the public not to wait for the last minute to register.
There were 1,181,139 applicants who registered from July 15 to 23 based on latest COMELEC data. The Barangay and SK Elections will be held on October 31, 2016. # # # #

COMELEC REMINDS VOTERS: We are going manual for the Barangay and SK elections
The Commission on Elections is reminding the public that the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections on October 31 will be conducted using the old manual voting and counting method.
“There might be a common perception that the Barangay and SK elections will also be automated since the 2016 National and Local automated elections have just been concluded. We will be voting manually on October 31st. Voters will be using a ballot with blanks where they will write down the names of their selected candidates.” COMELEC Spokesperson James Jimenez said.
The Commission will start printing ballots on August 21.

NATIONAL YOUTH COMMISSION

ON THE SK VOTERS REGISTRATION
The National Youth Commission believes that an extension of the registration period for the Sangguniang Kabataan would be beneficial in order to achieve a higher turnout on the number of registrants for a comprehensive local election this October.
Following the general sentiment of the youth sector, our agency appealed to the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) to extend the period of registration particularly for the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK).
In line with the prescriptions of Republic Act 10742, or the Sangguniang Kabataan Reform Law, Chapter 7 (Section 31) states that the registration period of the Katipunan ng Kabataan shall be no less than 1 month or 30 days. Thus, it is but prudent to request COMELEC to extend the period of registration instead of the ten (10) day period of registration approved by the poll body.
NYC already took action in response to the youth sector's recommendation upon the issuance of COMELEC Resolution No. 10148 citing the guidelines for SK registration.
NYC takes these measures to avoid the disenfranchisement of young people who wish to take part on the registration process.
