Nearly 100 student journalists from Gusa Elementary School and East Gusa National High School participated in a collaborative journalism training aimed at strengthening their skills ahead of the Division School Press Conference (DSPC) 2026.
InkHANCE: Collaborative Journalism Training 2026 was held Aug. 22 at Gusa Elementary School and was organized by Binhi Publication through the Sangguniang Kabataan of Barangay Gusa, in collaboration with Gusa Elementary School, East Gusa National High School, and the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines-Communication Arts, Languages, and Literature (USTP-CALL) Unit.
The USTP-CALL Unit served as Binhi Publicationโs academic partner in the training, providing trainers and speakers who shared their expertise in campus journalism and guided participants through various journalism disciplines.
In his opening message, Dr. Ramir Philip Jones V. Sonsona of the USTP-CALL Unit expressed gratitude for the invitation to take part in the initiative and highlighted the value of collaborations that provide students with opportunities to develop their journalism skills.
The training covered news, feature, sports, and science and technology writing, along with editorial writing, copyreading and headline writing, photojournalism, and editorial cartooning.
Participants also took part in writing exercises and practical activities designed to strengthen their skills and prepare them for the different categories of the campus journalism competition.
The activity formed part of the participantsโ preparation for the Division School Press Conference 2026, held Sept. 2 to 4 at Bulua Central School in Cagayan de Oro City.
For Binhi Publication, however, the training goes beyond preparing students for a competition.
As the youth publication of the Gusa Sangguniang Kabataan, Binhi seeks to use journalism as a platform to nurture young people who can recognize issues, seek the truth, and tell stories responsibly.
Project Head and Editor-in-Chief Mikhail Christian Gallana said Binhiโs role is not only to tell stories that matter but also to nurture young journalists who can carry the values of responsible journalism into their schools and communities.
Gallana said the publication aims to develop young journalists who can become a โbeacon of truthโ and use their voices to contribute meaningfully to their communities.
The training reflected this objective by combining technical journalism skills with activities centered on accuracy, ethics, responsibility, and critical thinking.
Gusa SK Chairperson Dorlyn Rose P. Baltazar, meanwhile, emphasized the role of student journalists in the community, particularly their responsibility to inform, document, and give voice to issues and stories that affect their fellow students and the wider community.
Binhi Publication expressed its appreciation to the USTP-CALL Unit for serving as its academic partner and providing trainers and speakers for the journalism training, as well as to Gusa Elementary School and East Gusa National High School for their support and participation.
Through InkHANCE, Binhi Publication and the Gusa SK Council sought to give young journalists an opportunity to sharpen their skills while encouraging them to view journalism not simply as a competition, but as a responsibility to truth and community.
The initiative underscored Binhi Publicationโs commitment to nurturing the next generation of young journalists who can tell stories that matter and become responsible voices in their own communities.
