The Avid Cyclist

The Avid Cyclist I love to bike! I started when I first had my tricycle at 2 years old. Now at 50 years old, I use my mountain bike, and I go for 100km rides

I moved up to BMX at six years old, and for the next 25 years I pedalled my way to a lot of different terrain.

Nothing ruins a climb faster than the crunch of a dropped chain. You lose momentum instantly and scramble to unclip before falling over.

Most riders think it is just bad luck but it is usually mechanical.

Worn components are the most common cause of the problem. As the chain stretches and teeth wear down they cannot mesh properly. Shark fin shaped teeth on your chainrings mean you need new parts.

Your derailleur limit screws might also be set incorrectly. These screws stop the chain from being pushed too far off the rings.

A dirty drivetrain is another frequent offender. Gunk and old grease create friction that prevents smooth shifting.

Even a slightly bent derailleur hanger can cause major headaches.

But often the issue comes down to shifting technique. Changing gears under heavy load forces the chain to derail.

The secret is to soft pedal for a split second as you shift. This helps the chain lock into place before you apply power again.
