The Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) Caraga issued an official air quality monitoring update as of 4:00 p.m. today, September 3, for Butuan City, classifying the current ambient air quality under the VERY UNHEALTHY category due to persistent haze.

๐Ÿšจ What does "VERY UNHEALTHY" air quality mean?

An air quality classification of Very Unhealthy means that ambient air particulate matter (such as PM2.5โ€‹) has reached elevated levels where health risks significantly increase for the entire community, particularly for vulnerable populations.

In view of the prevailing air quality conditions, DENR-EMB Caraga recommends to the affected local government units (LGUs) the suspension of classes from preschool to senior high school as precautionary measure to minimize exposure of learners to elevated PM2.5 concentrations.

For college level, the suspension of classes may be left to the discretion of the school administration or LGU.

โš ๏ธ Potential Health Effects

Exposure to this level of air pollution can cause mild to serious health reactions:

General Public: Eye, nose, and throat irritation, coughing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and lightheadedness.

Vulnerable Groups (Children, Elderly, Pregnant Women): High risk of aggravated respiratory issues and cardiovascular strain.

Individuals with Pre-existing Conditions: Increased risk of severe asthma attacks, chronic bronchitis flares, or cardiovascular emergencies.

๐Ÿ›กRecommended Precautionary Measures

Stay Indoors: Postpone unnecessary outdoor activities and trips. Keep doors and windows closed to block haze from entering living spaces.

Wear High-Grade Protection: If going outdoors is unavoidable, wear a well-fitted N95 mask (standard surgical masks do not filter fine particulates effectively).

Protect Sensitive Individuals: Anyone with asthma, heart conditions, or respiratory illness should stay indoors, rest, and keep necessary medications (such as inhalers) readily accessible.

Avoid Heavy Traffic Areas: Pedestrians and commuters should avoid high-congestion roadways where vehicular emissions worsen air quality.

Reduce Vehicle Usage: The public is encouraged to voluntarily restrict vehicle use to reduce additional ambient pollution.

Maintain Indoor Air Quality: Refrain from indoor smoking, burning trash/garbage, or using appliances that release smoke.

Stay tuned to official announcements from DENR-EMB Caraga and local government units (LGUs) for real-time monitoring updates.

Stay safe, Butuanons! Please share this post to keep your family and community informed. (DENR-EMB)

The Department of Health Center for Health Developmentโ€“Caraga advises the public to take appropriate precautionary measures amid the observed haze affecting parts of the Caraga Region, particularly Butuan City.

According to the latest Department of Environment and Natural Resourcesโ€“Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) Region XIII situational report, the observed haze is associated with ongoing forest fires in Kalimantan, Indonesia. Prevailing meteorological conditions, particularly the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), may facilitate the transport of smoke and fine particulate matter toward the Philippines.

As of 4:00 PM on September 3, 2026, PMโ‚‚.โ‚… concentrations recorded at the Butuan City ENRO Station and Caraga State University (CSU) Main Campus Station were 51 ยตg/Ncm and 54 ยตg/Ncm, respectively, both classified as VERY UNHEALTHY. Meanwhile, PMโ‚โ‚€ concentrations at both monitoring stations remained within the FAIR category.

In view of the current air quality condition, DOH Caraga reminds the public, particularly individuals sensitive to particulate pollution, children, older persons, and those with existing health conditions, to take precautions while the haze persists. The public is advised to limit prolonged outdoor exposure, stay hydrated, and take appropriate protective measures when outdoors. Those experiencing difficulty breathing, persistent coughing, eye irritation, or other concerning symptoms should seek medical attention. The public is also urged to follow official health and air quality advisories and avoid sharing unverified information.

The DENR-EMB Region XIII continues to conduct 24-hour monitoring and assessment of the air quality situation and will issue succeeding updates as additional validated monitoring data become available. The next update is scheduled for 8:00 AM on September 4, 2026.

Stay informed. Stay alert. Protect your health and safety.

HUWAG BALEWALAIN ANG . ๐ŸŒซ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ท

DOH: PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THE DANGER OF HAZE AND DIRTY AIR!

According to the latest report from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB), the current situation of the air is being monitored due to haze affecting areas in the National Capital Region (NCR), Central Luzon, CALABARZON, and MIMAROPA.

The observed haze is possibly caused by smoke and transboundary haze from fires in Kalimantan, Indonesia brought to our country due to the cold weather.

A reminder to public drivers, delivery riders, street vendors, and field workers who are often on the road, follow the guidelines and reminders from the DOH during the haze. Remember, always prioritize your health!
