General Information
As early as 1800’s the then Barangay Ambago was still a forested area. The
name and its origin came from one of the trees which had mostly grown in the barangay – the Ambago trees. However, inaccessible was the area due to inexistent roads, the people lived in abundance. The “balsa and “bauto” were the early means of transportation. According to the old folks in this barangay, only the clans of Dumaplin, Buque, Piencenaves, Bustillo and Musico occupied the poblacion of Ambago. In Sitio Suatan were occupied by the clans of Buyan, Gabor, Trillo, Abraham and Asaytona and in Sitio Ambangan were the Mendoza, Apat, and Gabor were the identified occupants. In 1901 the whole area was recognized as a sitio of Barangay Libertad. It was known as Sitio Manuway from the native word “Tuway” a kind of shell also abundant in the area at the time. In the same year, the First US Military General Francis Burton Harrison visited Libertad. In 1920 through an Executive Order, Sitio Manuway became a full-pledged barrio with Vicente Ayao as its first Barrio Lieutenant. Several events had taken place in 1935-37: the primary school was opened, the Catholic Chapel was established with San Isidro Labrador as Patron Saint and the celebration of its First Annual Fiesta took place on May 26, 1937 and the issuance of an Executive Order creating barrio Manuway with its new name as Barrio Ambago. By 1953 its primary school was converted into an elementary school and in 1960 its first housing subdivision, the Catbagan Subdivision, was opened, a sign of the increasing population trend. The area became a rebel infested during the Marcos regime. In 1971, thru the issuance of an Executive Order, Barrio Ambago became Barangay Ambago. In the 70’s, some amenities were introduced that helped improved the socio-economic condition of the community. The construction of the Ambago Road, the establishment of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and the development of the fishpond industry. Lately Barangay Ambago has experienced a rapid growth of population. Similar scenario has been experienced in the number of households. As a matter of fact, it has been one of the 14 rural barangays identified as an urbanizing barangay in the Butuan City Land-Use Plan with its northern portion being part of the proposed Sea-Port Industrial Town.
