In celebration of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Month, Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Caraga, in partnership with the DOST-Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI), officially launched and pilot-tested the AIgnite MSMEs Program on June 1, 2026, bringing together innovators, entrepreneurs, and educators from across the region to explore the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Supported through the DOST-Nexus for AI Research and Applications and the Caraga Regional Innovation and Startup Ecosystem (RISE), the activity gathered more than 140 participants, including MSME owners and managers, startup founders, software developers, AI practitioners, academe representatives, and innovation advocates.

Regional Director Engr. Noel M. Ajoc emphasized that while AI is rapidly transforming industries around the world, it also presents opportunities for Filipinos to become more innovative, competitive, and future-ready. He encouraged participants to embrace continuous learning and develop the skills needed to thrive in a technology-driven economy.

During the first session of the program, participants gained a deeper understanding of Artificial Intelligence through discussions on Basic Prompt Engineering, AI Use Cases for MSMEs, Key Fields in AI and Their Applications, Data for AI, Recent Trends in AI, and Ethics and Data Privacy. These topics provided practical insights into how AI can support business innovation and operational efficiency while highlighting the importance of quality data, emerging technologies, and the responsible use of AI to ensure that its benefits are ethical, secure, and sustainable.

Through initiatives such as AIgnite MSMEs, DOST aims to equip local enterprises and institutions with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the rapidly evolving AI landscape. By fostering greater awareness and adoption of emerging technologies, the program seeks to help organizations address operational challenges, enhance competitiveness, and unlock new opportunities for growth and development.

The initiative supports the country's National AI Strategy Framework and complements the digital transformation efforts under Elev8PH, championed by DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. It also contributes to the implementation of the Caraga Regional AI Roadmap, particularly in strengthening local talent and preparing the region's workforce for the future.

DOST continues to open doors for innovation and digital transformation in Caraga, ensuring that businesses, startups, and aspiring innovators are equipped to seize the opportunities of the AI era.

Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across the country are set to gain greater access to artificial intelligence (AI) knowledge and tools after around 180 Department of Science and Technology (DOST) personnel completed the AI for MSMEs Master Trainers Training on May 28.

Led by DOST Caraga in partnership with Limitless Lab, the virtual training equipped participants from regional and provincial DOST offices nationwide with the skills needed to help business owners adopt AI technologies that can improve productivity, customer engagement, and decision-making.

The initiative aims to address one of the growing challenges faced by local entrepreneurs, keeping pace with rapid technological advancements. Through the training, DOST personnel are expected to serve as AI mentors who will bring practical AI knowledge directly to MSMEs in their communities.

DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations Engr. Sancho A. Mabborang emphasized that AI can help level the playing field for smaller businesses by providing tools that were once only accessible to larger companies.

The sessions, facilitated by Ms. Joie Cruz, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Limitless Lab, introduced participants to AI fundamentals, real-world business applications, and a step-by-step AI adoption journey tailored for entrepreneurs. Discussions also covered responsible AI use, governance, and strategies for successful technology integration.

According to DOST Caraga Regional Director Engr. Noel M. Ajoc, the training seeks to prepare DOST personnel to become catalysts of digital transformation in their respective localities.

The program is part of the AIM ASEAN Programme, which aims to build a nationwide network of AI Master Trainers. Through this initiative, local MSMEs are expected to gain easier access to emerging technologies, enabling them to streamline operations, strengthen competitiveness, and respond more effectively to changing market demands.

As AI continues to reshape industries worldwide, the training marks a step toward ensuring that Filipino entrepreneurs, regardless of business size or location, are equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to succeed in an increasingly digital economy.

DOST Caraga convened local innovators, government leaders, academic institutions, and support organizations for a Startup Ecosystem Mapping activity in Tandag City on May 28, 2026, as part of its efforts to strengthen the cityโ€™s innovation and entrepreneurship landscape.

The activity provided a platform for stakeholders to assess the current state of innovation in Tandag, identify opportunities and challenges, and explore pathways for nurturing technology-driven enterprises and homegrown solutions.

In his opening message, DOST Caraga Regional Director Engr. Noel M. Ajoc emphasized the importance of fostering an environment where innovative ideas can evolve into sustainable ventures that address real-world challenges. He also highlighted DOST programs and initiatives designed to support startups and innovators, encouraging greater collaboration among stakeholders to cultivate a culture of innovation and problem-solving.

DOST Surigao del Sur Provincial Director Engr. Ramil A. Sanchez shared insights on the provinceโ€™s growing innovation landscape and emphasized the value of partnerships in helping innovators transform concepts into viable solutions.

Representing the local government, Hon. Alvin Ty, Sangguniang Panlungsod Member, reaffirmed the cityโ€™s commitment to initiatives that promote innovation, digital transformation, and inclusive economic growth.

Participants engaged in a collaborative mapping exercise that examined the startup journey across the stages of Idea, Launch, Growth, and Success. They identified existing support mechanisms, discussed ecosystem strengths and gaps, and developed a shared Vision, Mission, Goals, and Objectives to guide future initiatives. Moreover, the discussion highlighted the potential of local talent, research, technology, and entrepreneurship to create solutions that respond to community needs and emerging market opportunities.

As Tandag City continues to explore its place in the regionโ€™s growing innovation landscape, stakeholders recognized that building a startup ecosystem is a long-term effort that requires sustained collaboration, local leadership, and continuous support for aspiring innovators. The activity served as an initial step toward connecting ideas, institutions, and communities that can help shape a more innovation-driven future for the city.

On May 25, 2026, DOST Caraga conducted a session on โ€œVibe Coding 2026: Capacity Building and System Development and Deployment Program,โ€ equipping personnel with digital skills to develop systems that address operational challenges within the agency.

For DOST Caraga Regional Director Engr. Noel M. Ajoc, initiatives like Vibe Coding strengthen the agencyโ€™s goal of developing a digitally capable workforce and fostering innovation within government systems. Under his leadership, DOST Caraga continues to support programs that enhance technical competencies and prepare personnel to respond to the evolving needs of communities and stakeholders across the region.

The initiative aims to enable employees create solutions that streamline processes, improve data management, and enhance government service delivery. By transforming ideas into functional digital platforms, participants can contribute to building a more efficient and citizen-centered government processes.

A key highlight of the activity was the presentation of prototype systems developed by participating teams. These outputs showcased innovative ways to automate workflows and improve office operations through practical and user-friendly digital solutions.

The workshop serves as the first phase of the Vibe Coding 2026 program, with the next session focusing on back-end development, system integration, testing, and deployment. Outstanding outputs will also be recognized through the awarding of the Best Developed Systems.
