MANILA — The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to defend and protect the rights of 25 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) currently on death row in various countries, assuring the public that each case continues to receive the highest level of legal and diplomatic attention from the Philippine government.

The Department stated that it is working closely with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Office of the President to guarantee that every affected OFW receives due process, has access to competent legal counsel, and is provided with all opportunities for clemency or sentence commutation.

“Every OFW is a part of our global Filipino family. We will continue to stand by them, fight for their rights, and seek justice and compassion wherever possible,” DMW Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac said.

Cacdac noted that the number of OFWs on death row has significantly decreased—from 50 to 60 earlier this year to just 25 today—following reforms in Malaysia’s sentencing laws and the government’s continued diplomatic engagement.

The DMW clarified that its support goes beyond legal aid, providing psychological, moral, and financial assistance to the families of affected OFWs. The department also continues to improve its pre-departure orientation and legal literacy programs to prevent similar cases in the future.

“These cases remind us of the importance of empowering our workers with knowledge and support,” the DMW said. “We remain committed to protecting every Filipino abroad — not only in times of success, but especially in times of hardship.”

The DMW assured the public that diplomatic and humanitarian efforts are ongoing to promote justice, compassion, and respect for every Filipino worker overseas.
