Empowering Libraries in the Digital Age: UPHSL Hosts International LIS Webinar

On November 22, 2025, the University of Perpetual Help System Laguna – University Library, in collaboration with the College of Education – Library and Information Science Program and the Graduate School – Master of Library and Information Science Program, successfully conducted a free international LIS webinar titled “Advancing Library Practice in the Digital Era: Open Access, Digital Literacy, and Sustainable Strategies.”

The event gathered librarians, educators, students, and information professionals from various countries, creating a dynamic platform for sharing insights on how libraries can continue to adapt in an increasingly digital world. Discussions highlighted the essential role of libraries as champions of openness, equity, innovation, and sustainability.

Two distinguished speakers led the informative sessions:

🔹 Prof. Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe, University of Illinois — presented on open access business models, emphasizing their significance in expanding access to knowledge.

🔹Dr. Shamila Mohamed Shuhidan, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia — discussed the evolving challenges of digital literacy, stressing the importance of empowering communities to navigate digital information responsibly.

Participants gained valuable perspectives on how library services must evolve to remain responsive, innovative, and aligned with the needs of today’s digital society. The webinar concluded with a thought-provoking discussion on libraries’ vital role in promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including quality education, reduced inequalities, and strong institutions.

This initiative reflects the University of Perpetual Help System Laguna’s ongoing commitment to advancing library practice and contributing to global SDG efforts. By supporting open access and digital literacy initiatives, UPHSL reaffirms its dedication to building a more informed, empowered, and sustainable community. 🌍✨
