A remarkable encounter with one of the Philippines’ most precious and endangered wildlife species—the Visayan Spotted Deer, also known as the Philippine Spotted Deer or Prince Alfred’s Deer.

Found in the forests of Negros and Panay, this elusive and primarily nocturnal species is a living reminder of the rich biodiversity hidden within our mountains.

Long before Basay became the peaceful coastal town we know today, its shores were already part of a much bigger story.

During World War II, two American submarines — the USS Narwhal and USS Crevalle — are recorded to have reached the shores of Basay, carrying personnel and vital supplies believed to have supported the guerrilla forces in Negros in their fight against the Japanese occupation.

The exact landing points may no longer be clearly identified, but the stories passed down and historical records remain part of Basay’s wartime heritage.

Some places are remembered not because of what we see today, but because of the history that happened there.

Standing in Brgy. Maglinao is one of the remaining reminders of the once-active CDCP Mining era that shaped a part of Basay’s history during the 1970s.

Decades may have passed, but places like this continue to tell stories of the people, work, and community that once surrounded them.

A hidden gem beneath the waters of Brgy. Bongalonan, Basay, Negros Oriental—our very own 40-hectare Marine Protected Area, home to more than 100 marine species. 🐠🪸

Managed by the Bongalonan Small Fisherfolk’s Association (BSFA) under the leadership of President Mr. Rico Opiar, this sanctuary is more than just a protected area. It is a breeding ground where marine life can recover, thrive, and multiply—and a source of hope for our local fisherfolk.

With responsible management and low-impact tourism, we can protect our marine resources while creating opportunities for the community.

The beauty of Bongalonan belongs to all of us. Let’s work together to keep its waters alive, its reefs protected, and its marine life thriving for generations to come. 💙🌊
