CALL NUMBERS IN LIBRARY CLASSIFICATION

Call numbers are unique codes assigned to library materials to indicate their specific location on the shelves. They serve as an address for each item in the library, helping users and librarians identify where a book or resource is placed within the collection. Call numbers are usually printed on the spine label of a book and are also recorded in the library catalogue.

In classification systems such as the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) and the Library of Congress Classification (LCC), call numbers are constructed based on the subject of the book and additional identifying elements. In DDC, the call number begins with a numerical classification that represents the subject area, followed by letters that usually represent the author’s name. For example, a mathematics book might have a call number beginning with 510, which represents mathematics.

In the Library of Congress Classification system, call numbers consist of letters and numbers. The letters represent the main subject area, while the numbers provide more detailed subject divisions. Additional letters and numbers are often added to represent the author and the year of publication, creating a unique identifier for each book.

Call numbers play an important role in helping users locate books on library shelves. Since materials are arranged according to their call numbers, users can follow the sequence of numbers or letters on the shelves to find a specific item. This organized arrangement also places books on similar subjects close to one another, making it easier for users to discover related resources.

By using call numbers, libraries maintain order in their collections and ensure that users can locate information resources quickly and efficiently.

TYPES OF LIBRARY CATALOGUES

Library catalogues are tools used to organize and provide access to information about the materials available in a library. They help users identify the resources held by the library, such as books, journals, and other materials, and guide them in locating these items within the collection. Catalogues play an important role in supporting library classification and overall organization.

One of the traditional types of library catalogues is the card catalogue. This system consists of small cards arranged in drawers within a cabinet. Each card contains important information about a book, such as the author, title, subject, and call number. The cards are usually arranged alphabetically by author, title, or subject, allowing users to search for materials easily. Although many libraries have replaced card catalogues with digital systems, they were widely used in libraries for many decades.

Another important type is the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). OPAC is a computerized catalogue that allows users to search for library materials using computers or mobile devices. Users can search by author, title, subject, or keywords and quickly find information about the availability and location of items in the library. OPAC systems have made searching for information faster and more convenient compared to traditional manual catalogues.

Digital catalogues are also becoming increasingly common in modern libraries. These catalogues are integrated with digital library systems and provide access not only to printed materials but also to electronic resources such as e-books, online journals, and digital repositories. Through digital catalogues, users can access library collections remotely and retrieve information without being physically present in the library.

Overall, library catalogues are essential tools for organizing information resources and guiding users in locating materials within the library. Whether in traditional card form or modern digital systems, catalogues help ensure that library collections remain accessible, organized, and easy to navigate.

LOOK | Dr. Pet Roey L. Pascual, Vice President for Research and Development (VPR&D), has been formally designated as Transitory Officer-in-Charge (OIC) in the Office of the University President, effective immediately, through Secretary’s Certificate Resolution No. 124, Series of 2025, issued by the Board of Regents.

The appointment was approved during the Fourth Quarter Regular Meeting held on December 11, 2025.

Dr. Pascual will concurrently serve as Vice President for Research and Development, while also overseeing the Office of the University President to ensure administrative and operational continuity. His authority and responsibilities as Transitory OIC are vested by the Board of Regents, as outlined in the Secretary’s Certificate Resolution.

He shall hold the position until the next Board of Regents meeting, subject to the Board’s discretion.
