A Wake-Up Call for All Teachers and School Staff 🍂

Before we impose punishment on students — especially for things like being late —
can we please ask “why” first?
Can we offer a chance to explain before we discipline?

Because today, something happened that broke my heart.

A classmate came to school late — 8:20 AM.
Per school policy, latecomers are required to clean the campus.
Without any questions, a faculty member from the guidance office told him to floor wax the ground floor hallway — under the heat of the morning sun.

No one asked if he had eaten.
No one asked if he was okay.
No one asked why he was late.

He hadn’t even had time to shower or eat breakfast — he was simply running late.
And yet, he spent 30 minutes waxing an area the size of two classrooms, dripping in sweat.
By the time he reached our classroom on the 3rd floor, he was soaked, weak, and eventually — he collapsed.

We rushed to help.
I gave him water — he drank three full cups.
We helped him change, tried to feed him, and then brought him to the infirmary.

And this is the part that hurts most.

He never told anyone at school, but…
He works after class.
He sells eco-bags in Cogon to help support his family.
He doesn’t get home until 10 PM.
He eats dinner at 11, does the dishes, and sleeps around 1 AM.
He wakes up at 5 AM to get ready for school.
That means… he runs on just 4–5 hours of sleep every single day.

He didn’t want to tell the school because he was afraid they’d think he was just making excuses.

But what he needed wasn’t punishment.
He needed compassion.
Understanding.
A simple, “Anak, okay ka lang ba?”

Dear teachers, we know discipline is part of learning.
But may we never forget:
Behind every tardy student is a story.
Behind every struggle is a reason.

Discipline with empathy.
Correct with care.
And above all, listen first.

Because sometimes, all a child needs is to be seen.

A new chapter unfolds for the municipality of Balatan as fourteen (14) of its barangays—Camangahan, Coguit, Duran, Luluasan, Pararao, Cabungan, Cayogcog, Laganac, Montenegro, Pulang Daga, Sagrada Nacacale, San Francisco, Santiago Nacacale, and Tapayas—officially join Camarines Sur’s digital transformation through the CamSur Free Wi-Fi for All Program. This milestone reflects the Provincial Government’s pursuit of digital inclusivity, backed by the strategic leadership and implementation 🌐🛜💻

For local educators like Christopher Baldosa, an ALS teacher in Barangay Tapayas, this connectivity is transformative. “Bilang ALS teacher, dakolong tabang talaga ading CamSur Free Wi-Fi.

What was once a challenge defined by distance, limited access, and disrupted learning has now shifted to a future powered by connectivity. Reports are submitted with ease, learning continues uninterrupted, and families stay informed and in touch.

Ormoc City Bans Sugary Drinks in Government Events, Mandates Water as Primary Beverage

Ormoc City, Philippines — In a decisive move promoting public health and wellness, Ormoc City Mayor Lucy Torres Gomez has signed Executive Order No. 2025-012, mandating that water shall be the primary beverage option in all events and activities organized by the city government.

Citing the Local Government Code (RA 7160) which mandates local government units to uphold public health and safety, the order aims to curb the excessive consumption of sugary drinks, which have been linked to various health problems including obesity, diabetes, and chronic illnesses.

Under this new policy:

• All city government departments and offices are directed to refrain from including sugary drinks in food and beverage purchase requests for official activities, meetings, workshops, and conferences.

• In place of sugary beverages, bottled water will be the default option. Healthy alternatives such as unsweetened teas, infused water, and natural fruit juices without added sugar may also be considered, depending on availability and budget.

• The order defines “sugary drinks” to include carbonated soft drinks, sweetened fruit drinks, energy drinks, sports drinks, and flavored waters with added sugar.

• The City Budget Office, City Accounting Office, and Bids and Awards Committee (BAC) are tasked to ensure compliance, while the Internal Audit Services (IAS) will monitor adherence.

Mayor Gomez emphasized that this initiative is part of the city’s commitment to promoting a healthier lifestyle and better well-being among employees and residents. | VAW
