Obesity is a growing public health concern that affects people across all ages and communities. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), ๐Ÿญ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐Ÿด ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฒ worldwide were living with obesity in 2022, while adult obesity has more than doubled since 1990. Among children and adolescents aged 5โ€“19 years, more than 390 million were overweight in 2022, including over 160 million living with obesity

In the Philippines, overweight and obesity have also become important nutrition concerns. The Hospital at Maayo (2021) similarly emphasizes that obesity may increase the risk of conditions such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and certain cancers. Data from the 2023 National Nutrition Survey, ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿต.๐Ÿด% ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—™๐—ถ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ผ ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐˜‚๐—น๐˜๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฌโ€“๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿต ๐—ฎ๐˜€ ๐—ผ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ฒ using the Asia-Pacific BMI classification, while ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿณ.๐Ÿฏ% ๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต๐˜. Combined, 57.1% were overweight or obese highlighting the need for stronger prevention and management efforts (DOH, NNS, & WHO, 2024).

Prevention begins with establishing healthy habits throughout the life course. In the Philippine setting, these principles can be guided by the 10 Kumainments, the National Nutrition Council's simplified version of the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos. ๐Ÿฏ, "๐—ž๐˜‚๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—ด๐˜‚๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜†," promotes daily consumption of vegetables and fruits. ๐Ÿด, โ€œ๐—›๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐˜†-๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐˜† ๐˜€๐—ฎ ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ฎ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜, ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜๐—ถ๐—ธ๐—ฎ ๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ถ๐˜€,โ€ encourages moderation of foods high in salt, fat, and sugar.

Physical activity is an essential component of obesity prevention and is reflected in ๐—œ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ธ; ๐—ต๐˜‚๐˜„๐—ฎ๐—ด ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—น๐˜†๐—ผโ€ For adults, the World Health Organization recommends 150โ€“300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity per week, or 75โ€“150 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity, or an equivalent combination of both. Adults are also encouraged to engage in muscle-strengthening activities on at least 2 days per week. For children and adolescents, WHO recommends an average of 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per day across the week (WHO, 2020) is another important part of obesity prevention. Regular movement supports overall health and helps maintain physical fitness, while reducing prolonged sedentary behavior can provide additional benefits. Healthy sleep habits and supportive family and community environments are also important components of a healthy lifestyle (WHO, 2025).

This Obesity Prevention Awareness Week, let us choose health over stigma, prevention over judgment, and collective action over blame. Small, sustainable changes supported by healthier homes, schools, communities, and food environments can contribute to a healthier future for everyone.

Health is not a number on a scale. Prevention starts with informed choices, supportive environments, and collective action.

Letโ€™s promote health, not stigma. ๐Ÿ’š

Rain or shine, our commitment to a clean, safe, and healthy community continues!

Despite the heavy rains today, the Barangay Council of Barangay Lower General Luna still came together to conduct our Barangay Kalinisan Day. We worked together to keep our surroundings clean, clear potential hazards, and promote proper waste management.

The weather may have been challenging, but it did not stop us from doing our part for our community. Every effort, big or small, contributes to a cleaner and safer barangay.

Clean Today, Care for Tomorrow!

Another meaningful Barangay Kalinisan Day was successfully conducted today at Bautista-Anido Alley!

The barangay council worked together to clean the area and help keep our surroundings safe, clean, and orderly. Beyond cleaning, we also took time to pack and organize cartons for reuse, finding practical ways to give these materials a second life rather than throwing them away immediately.

Small actions like cleaning, reusing, recycling, and repurposing can create a big impact when we do them together. Let us continue building a cleaner, greener, and more responsible community, one clean-up at a time!

Kalinisan ngayon, kinabukasan ay alagaan.
