“What is the musical instrument that cannot be seen, cannot be touched, only be heard, felt not by the skin but by the heart and soul? This is none other than the voice.” – from a popular folk riddle.

The Cordillera region is indeed very rich in our indigenous vocal music heritage. Chants, folk songs, melodies, tunes, we have all sorts of vocal music genres in all occasions. The ancestral wisdom of the Cordillera indigenous peoples in song-making and chanting must be passed down continuously. Thus, a workshop session on salidummay song-writing was conducted during the SOYOSOY DI KULTURA: A Youth Camp on Cordillera Indigenous Knowledge and Cultures, facilitated by Bayubay Daguitan of Salidummay.

Our ancestors sculpted their oral history through songs and chants. They taught their children indigenous values through folk tunes and melodies. The younger generation of today also have their own stories to tell and songs to sings. We convey messages of unity, solidarity, and diversity through these songs and chants. 💗🎶✊

"Saan lang nga basta-basta ti panagtokar kadagitoy nga instrumento. Saan daytoy nga contest nu sino ti kapipigsaan wenno kapapaspasan. Feel every beat, feel every vibration."

(Paying our indigenous bamboo musical instruments is also a serious matter. This is not a contest of who's the loudest nor the fastest to play the music. Feel every beat, feel every vibration)

This was our primary lesson from the workshop session on the Cordillera indigenous bamboo musical instruments during the SOYOSOY DI KULTURA: A Youth Camp on Cordillera Indigenous Knowledge and Cultures. The workshop was facilitated by our fellow cultural bearer-worker Absalom Toyeng of Tawid ti Igorot PH. The participants leveled up their skills and knowledge on playing the tongatong (stamping tubes), patatag (leg xylophone), saggaypo (pan pipes), tongali (nose flute) and ulibaw (jaw harp). A colorful jamming of the different timbres of these instruments concluded the workshop.

Every instrument carries ancestral wisdom that was passed down from one generation to another. Every beat carries a long history of resilient indigenous communities caring for the land and environment.

SOYOSOY DI KULTURA. A Youth Camp on Cordillera Indigenous Knowledge and Cultures

Partners for Indigenous Knowledge Philippines - PIKP in partnership with Dap-ayan ti Kultura iti Kordilyera and Artista ti Kordilyera para iti Wayawaya conducted a three-day youth camp on Cordillera indigenous knowledge and cultures from July 24 to 26, 2026 in Avong Nen Romy, Wangal, La Trinidad, Benguet.

With the theme "Promoting Biodiversity Conservation Through Indigenous Performing Arts," the participants underwent study sessions and educational discussions about Cordillera indigenous values and practices, local biodiversity, and contemporary social issues our indigenous communities in the region are facing. The youth camp were also filled with workshops on Cordillera indigenous music and dances, song-writing, and community theater, realizing the artistic and creative skills of the participants.

At the end of the youth camp, the participants acquired a deeper and wider understanding of how rich and diverse the Cordillera indigenous knowledge and culture are, and of their role as young cultural bearers in conserving, nurturing and defending our ancestral lands, environment, biodiversity, and indigenous and local communities.

Managni ya manliwliwa! When tradition meets modernity...🕺💗

This was during the "PALIN-AWÁ: A Benefit Concert for Manong Enteng" held in Heartland Resto Bar, Dominican Hill Road, Baguio City in August 21, 2025.

Vicente “Manong Enteng” Dilem is a 72-year-old veteran labor leader and dedicated organizer who has spent decades advocating for workers' rights in the Cordilleras. From 2002 to 2005, he served as an officer of the Lepanto Employees Union-NAFLU-KMU. He was also a former regional coordinator for Cordilleras and national council member of Kilusang Mayong Uno. He has been a steadfast organizer for workers in Philex Mines, Itogon-Suyoc Resources Inc. (ISRI), and Agro Foods.

Manong Enteng is currently in a critical struggle for survival. He has been diagnosed with Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) with two-vessel involvement and urgently requires a Percutaneous Coronary Intervention. The medical procedure is estimated to cost P500,000 at the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center.

This benefit concert is a collective effort to raise the necessary funds for Manong Enteng’ medical treatment. More than a musical event, this will serve as a concrete expression of solidarity and support for a leader who has given so much to the labor movement. 💗🎶✊
