MAY TOFI NA? MAY TOFI NA!
UCians, did you know? Around campus bulletin boards, the university has already released the Tuition and Other Fees Increase (TOFI) for School Year 2026-2027. This will be implemented through a carry-over scheme to follow incoming freshmen throughout their stay at the institution, averaging around 5%,
While the dry ink on these papers confirm these signs were approved as early as February 24, they remained invisible to the public for days, only surfacing in the first week of March. This delay is particularly striking given the deadline for February 28, or CHEDโs final deadline for mandatory fee disclosures and consultations.
This was not a simple delay, but a tactical silence. By releasing this information so close to mandated deadlines, the administration has effectively suffocated student discourse and bypassed genuine consultation. This maneuver places the heaviest financial weight on the incoming freshmen who have yet to step foot on campus and have no voice to defend themselves. Every line on their assessment forms now carries the added burden of Redundant, Exorbitant, and Dubious (RED) fees.
This 5% isn't just a mere statistic. It's the cost of fewer meals, longer shifts, and the threat of a delayed graduation. Amidst the crushing weight of inflation, value-added tax (VAT), excise tax, as well as rising oil prices, these hikes are unjustifiableโespecially as our basic student services remain in a state of decay.
As students of a university built on the principle that "Education is a birthright," we refuse to watch that right be sold at a premium. Even past government-set deadlines, we should continue to amplify our voices and stand up for our fellow students. It is never too late to demand transparency that goes beyond explanations. We demand active student participation and a clear audit of the profits being squeezed from our struggle.
The time for resilience is over. Our education is indeed a birthright, and so is defending it from being auctioned to the highest bidder. We stand firm in our call for a 0% TOFI and accessible quality education. It is high time that we let the administration hear that we are not just names on an enrollment list, but a collective force that is willing to fight for their worth.
We will never be silenced by deadlines, nor will we be moved by empty promises.
