Since its inception in 1930, the Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI) has evolved from overseeing crop research and production to embracing a broader mandate that addresses the diverse needs of Philippine agriculture.

It plays a pivotal role in ensuring food and nutrition security for the Filipino people by providing quality planting materials, conducting research and technology development, managing crop pests and diseases, conserving and utilizing plant genetic resources sustainably, implementing plant quarantine measures, certifying seeds and planting materials, protecting plant varieties, ensuring food safety, advancing biotechnology, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
